Galata West is incredible value for money in Istanbul's Beyoglu district.

The hostel is in a small alley within walking distance of Galata Tower and the Ataturk bridge, both of which you can see from its lovely roof-top terrace, along with such landmarks as the Hagia Sofia and the Blue Mosque.

The hostel is a recently remodeled, five-floor walk-up with beautiful woodwork and colorful Turkish banquettes. The bathrooms are mopped daily and there are plenty of hand-books and maps available.

The inexpensive price includes as much coffee and tea as you want, a scrumptious breakfast, 2 free computers for use, free linen and towels, and wifi access in the rooms and both lounges. For a small additional charge, you get in-house laundry, designer coffee, and a Turkish water-pipe.

The friendly and very generous owner will invite you to a cup of tea and a snack every so often and the staff hang-out with the guests and help out whenever you need anything.

The rooms are basic, but adequate and clean. There's a bathroom and shower on every floor, and there is always hot-water available, for baths and for drinking.

The location is perfect, close to Taksim square, shopping on Istiklal, the Karakoy waterfront, and the M2 metro stop, as well as the tram and ferry. A fifteen-minute walk over the Galata bridge takes you Istanbul's prime tourist spots in Sultanahmet. There is a money exchange around the corner, as well as several ATMs and banks.

The only drawback is the somewhat tiresome climb up and down the stairs, but by planning ahead, you can limit the number of times you negotiate them. Tip: You will spend an inordinate amount of time outside your room on the terrace, drinking tea and exchanging stories with other guests.

Me and my two friends stayed at a mixed room during New Years and we loved it. We met amazing people, the atmosphere is great and the terrace has beautiful views. Staff were incredibly nice and helpful. We will for sure come back.

We took sometime to find this hostel near galata tower, but anyway it is in a good location. The staff on our arrival has helped us a lot with many useful information and we were really thankful for that as it was our first day in istanbul. The terrace is the place that we like the most and the view is beautiful. We love our stay here.

This hostel ticks all the right boxes. Excellent facilities including a great kitchen, common area for socializing, entertainment systems, including PS3 and fast WiFi. The rooms are comfortable, clean and sucure with lockers. Staff couldn't be more helpful and location is great and close to a tram station. Also has a decent free Turkish breakfast. Good place to meet other backpackers.

Having spent a lot of time in hostels this is by far my favourite and this is where I've stayed for the longest period of time. It's also the only place to where I've gone back more than two times.

The vibe of the hostel is normally fantastic but of course it depends of the other guests. There is more people staying here during the summer months and if you're lucky to be there anytime between may-september you have to make sure to spend at least one night on the teracce. Here people will get to know each other and share travel stories over a shisha (water pipe) and a beer. For me the teracce is the best thing with the hostel; this is where you find the free coffee/tea, the amazing view and the kitchen where you can cook and store groceries.

The rooms are of good standard (although not luxurous- this is a hostel) and the breakfast which is included tastes great (especially when combined with the earlier mentioned view of the Galata tower and the Bosphorus).

It's about 10 minutes of walk to Istiklal; the amazing shopping/bar/restaurant street which leads to Taksim Square. Galata Tower is just a few streets up and the Sultanahmet area approximately 20 minutes away by walk (you can also catch the tram if you are feeling lazy).

Most staff are very friendly and will recommend you the best places in Istanbul. If you're lucky you can join them for "Zurna"; a 70cm long kebab roll.

All in all this hostel has a great vibe, is located in a great area and you get all of it for a great price. I'll definitely return next time I go to Istanbul; my favourite metropolitan in the world!

Room Tip: Spend as much time as possible on the teracce. The newly renovated double rooms with private bathroom are of high standard.
