“Excellent hiking trail: short, not too difficult, amazing views”
Review of Red Canyon

We generally go for longer hikes, but after having already done a rather challenging one the day before (the last part of the Israel Trail), we decided that a nice, easy, short, picturesque hike would be most suitable -- and the Red Canyon trail absolutely fit the bill! You can do a longer hike here, but if you choose the short one, you can make it through in less than a couple of hours. The walk through the Red Canyon is easy (there are a few moderately challenging areas where you have to climb up/down crevasses, sometimes with the help of metal rungs or ropes fixed to the walls), but nothing even a small child can't manage. And the views are just amazing. Highly recommended for an easy but picturesque hike.

We went with our ‘children’ aged 9, 12, 14, 20. For a family of experienced hikers this may well be a mild hike. For us it was challenging in parts. The scenery became increasingly surreal as we went further on to the point that it could have been from the set of a science fiction film. Our children went from not wanting to leave the hotel to becoming thoroughly immersed in the experience, especially the climbing parts.

Even with our limited knowledge we could see how delicate and precious the ecosystem is in the canyon and surrounds. So we have mixed feelings in recommending it. We want other people to see it. We also want this amazing spot to survive intact and not to be trampled to bits by hordes of tourists.

We would advise you to wear enclosed footwear as there is a lot of shingle. (We wore Crocs, which let stones work their way under our feet).

The Red Canyon is a place you should not miss if you are in Eilat. It was one of the highlights of our trip. Some descents can be rather challenging (especially if you fear heights), but we had a great experience (and our 4 year child as well).

I have arthritis and I desperately wanted to see this canyon, but my tour guide said it just was not something a 67 arthritic diabetic could do. He was right! I tried, boy did I try, but there was just no way I could maneuver it. And if you made a wrong step, you fell over 40 feet onto the floor of the canyon some say to certain death. I would hope just some bad scrapes but I suspect the guide was correct.. Well worth the effort if you are fit.

Nice walk with some climbing parts. Might take 2-3 hours in the sun, so take water. No entrance fee :-)
