My international guide book recommended a walk thru Mea Shearim so we followed their proposed walking route and 100% suggest you try to find room in your itinerary to do so as well.

As suggested, we stayed on the main road and did not venture down the side lanes thru the residential areas and dressed respectfully.

An experience like none other in any other place I've ever been! Take the 1/2 hour and make the walk!

I love walking around the narrow alleyways of Geula and Mea Shearim. Firstly I can eat nearly in every joint along the "avenue" . So that's a plus. Then I can always discover some bargain item being Judaica or practical things for the house or for a party. Lastly I just enjoy soaking in the atmosphere and walking through the shtiblech and other historic sites.

Me'a She'arim is the neighbourhood where the orthodox or Haredi Jewish live - mostly of Eastern European descent. The walk around in large numbers in their very uniform remarkable dress of black suits, white shirts and big black hats. We felt out of place but still at ease when we cruised through the neighbourhood on our way from the American colony to the Machane Yehuda market ... but we heard that during Shabbat (from Sunset Friday till after dark on Saturday) tourists are not really welcome there. This is also one of the few places in the world where more women work than men since men are expected to spend all their wake time on religious study.

Interesting experience which feels authentic and educational! Dress modestly coming to this area and be respectful. My advice: never come here on Sabbath unless you know all the rules and laws. Especially :never drive here on sabbath. You could be subjected to violent angry protest. Taking pictures discretely and respectfully is OK except on Sabbath. See and observe modesty signs. Do not use the cell phones Friday night till Saturday evening.
The street looks like picture from the past. People are in traditional garb. Many buildings have separate entrances for men and women. Me'a She'arim is great if you are shopping for Judaica.
