“Comfy and Good Value Hostel in a Great Location”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 October 2011

I stayed several night at the Sol Andino Hostel in La Paz and have only good things to say about it. It is run by the same people as Estrella Andina and Cruz de los Andes (both located nearby), and as far as I know it is the cheapest of the three.
The room had a private bathroom, it was large, comfy, clean, quiet and had a nice decor. The shower was hot and fantastic (lots of power) and the bed was big and comfy and the sheets super clean. The room was cleaned daily.
The buffet breakfast, which was included, was excellent. It consisted of bread, jam, butter, dulce de leche, fresh fruit (papaya and banana), 2 types of cereal, strawberry yogurt, fresh orange juice, tea, coffe, chocolate powder and milk. There was always plenty of food available.
The staff was super helpful, they didn't mind us hanging around in the lobby on our last day and drinking several cups of tea, they even let us eat our pot noodles and refilled our bottles with boiled water :) Whenever we needed more toilet paper and fresh towels, they happily gave it to us. They were helpful regarding bus schedules, restaurants, etc.
I believe this hostel gives excellent value for money, as I visited several hostels nearby which offered similar prices, but were nowhere as good.
The location is also fantastic, near all the main tourist shops, travel agencies and restaurants. It is a 15 minute-walk to the bus station, so there is no need to take a taxi if you are short on cash.

160Bs for a double room with a private bathroom, including breakfast.

After looking around a few hostels on IIIampu street, Sol Andino was the best and the cheapest. It's in a good location, very close to the witches market and to the cheaper backpacker food options (although none of them are too good). It's also very close to lots of tour shops where you can book a Death Road trip. (I'd recommend Madness Tours. I booked the Death Road biking trip through them, they were cheaper than Gravity and just fantastic).

The included breakfast is a buffet breakfast of bread, butter, cereal, fruit, juice and a hot drink. The buffet table is kept well stocked and if anything does run out you can ask for more.

The room was excellent. It was on the very top floor so it had a huge window which let in tons of light and it also gave a great view of the surrounding hills. It would be better to get a room nearer the top floor (despite there being no lift) because I could imagine that the lower rooms wouldn't have great windows or views, therefore they could be darker and colder.

The room was large. The double bed was very comfortable and the bedding was clean. The shower was an electric shower (the dodgy Bolivian kind) but it worked really well, it was powerful and hot.

The hostel has free wifi BUT it doesn't work above the 4th floor. However as you go up the stairs of the hostel, there are landings on each floor with sitting areas so I would go down a few floors and use the wifi there. There is also one computer.

There are two large roof terraces. One on the very top of the hostel (7th floor) so it had fantastic views of La Paz. There is also a roof terrace on the 6th floor with chairs and tables outside. There is also a table football on this terrace.

My only negatives are..........the wifi not working on the top two floors AND there being NO kitchen. It would have made staying in La Paz much better if there was a kitchen because the food options are really bad.

If you don't want to walk up a lot of stairs at this altitude don't stay here! (6 floors in total).

Room Tip: Get a room on the top floor or nearest the top floor for great views and sunlight!
