This country is very laid back, you need a local to get around, google maps doesn’t really work. The internet is pretty bad, the resorts really nice... very quiet and the staff really nice and helpful as well.its easy to get a bus to and from town.... the markets are amazing!! Fresh organic produce.... amazing. If you want to kick and back and have quiet time this is the place to be.

My husband and I stayed in the Tropicana for 6 months from January to July 2019 as long term guests while volunteering in Vanuatu. We had the most wonderful experience and now have amazing friends from the staff there who became more like family, from Pete the manager, Roy, Serah, Rose and lovely kitchen staff. All the staff were incredible without exception. If anything broke or didn’t work it was fixed or replaced right away.

It is not a new resort but has charm and is well kept. The location is magnificent, on a stunning lagoon where children, dogs and roosters all form part of a true local experience. If you want to feel part of the community this is a lovely place to stay.

I have read most of the reviews, some overly harsh, some a bit suss of being too good. As an experienced traveller and TripAdvisor, and having been to Vanuatu 4 times, I will try and give a fair and honest review. We stayed at the Tropicana for 12 nights.

My main tip for Vanuatu: You get what you pay for. If you want 5 Star you have to pay a lot for it. The Tropicana is middle of the road. Not the worse, not the best. But, it is value for your money.

Pros: 1. The staff were fantastic. When we needed things fixed in the room (you will need things fixed), they were onto it straight away. The staff were friendly, accommodating as best they could, and provided a well cared for stay.

2. Location was fantastic. Short walk to supermarket, low cost for local bus into town or to beach. Only 5-10min into town by bus. The resort is on the lagoon. It flows well, and is a beautiful backdrop with a local village the other side. I didn't want to swim in the lagoon because of the hundreds of starfish, but the locals swam in it. Other resort visitors used the canoes everyday and loved it.

3. Room 7 beachfront balcony was fantastic. Well ventilated, light, airy. Small kitchen meant that we could cook our own meals. 2 burner benchtop, no oven. Small fridge but ample.

4. Sunsets/Nighttime. It was really relaxing each night. Not many people there, so sometimes we had the restaurant to ourselves at night and watched the sunset with cocktails. This was magic. See some of my photos.

Cons: 1. Room was a bit rough in places. The mattress was terrible. I could feel each spring jab me as I rolled over and creaked. I had to fix a few things myself, such as kitchen drawer fell apart, and the bathroom door was falling apart. Workmanship is poor such as paintwork and kitchen, but, it was fine. It is a developing country. Some things you just have to roll with. The aircon broke once, but they fixed it immediately and was fantastic for the rest of the stay. We had no toaster, so they gave us one straight away.

2. Expensive to eat. The restaurant can be expensive to eat each day. But, all of Vanuatu is expensive. Breakfast is fine, but lunch and dinner were too much for us each day. The cheapest was a pub steak and chips for about $22 AU. However, all our meals were really nice. This is why we cooked as much as possible. The service is very slow, and you may only get asked once if you want a drink. But, again, you just need to relax and take in the amazing scenery (see photos). It is a very quiet restaurant, so limited staff, hence the long waits for food etc. They were often out of things on the menu. The 3 times I ordered coffee, they had to use instant coffee for my espresso!

3. Mosquitos were a bit annoying, so we just used repellant each night and day. We also burnt some coils on the balcony to help.

OVERALL: Despite some of the negatives, we would love to stay at the Tropicanna again. The staff were great, the location was great, the accommodation cost was fair, hotel room was worth it (Beachfront view). Hence the 'Very good' rating.

Room tip: Beachfront balcony Rm7. Can be noisy if party in dinning. Otherwise best view in resort.

We had a wonderful stay at this beautiful resort. The room was airy, clean and comfortable, with a balcony overlooking the lagoon. Access to the township of Port Vila was so easy, with a bus stop not far from the driveway. The staff were wonderful and always keen to help. Meals in the restaurant were freshly made to order and delicious, - they were the healthiest breakfasts we had eaten in a long while!! We will definitely return. The only downside was slow internet speed making it difficult to upload the amazing photographs taken. Looking forward to our next visit.

Enjoyed our last night in Vanuatu at his beautiful resort.
Great setting by the lagoon, quiet and away from town. Nice place to stay if you are looking to unwind in Port Vila, inconvenient if you want to make several trips to explore the town.
Staff were very friendly from the beginning and went out of their way to make our stay comfortable. Restaurant food was good (not great). Rooms were very spacious with balconies. Rooms had an AC which was a blessing.
Overall would definitely recommend.

Room tip: Get a room on the first floor so you have a balcony overlooking the lagoon.
