“An Oasis in the middle of chaos”
Reviewed 1 April 2012

Tranquility. Truly the place to stay in Yangon. Loved our room. Breakfast was superb. The bar is a great place to wind down your day.

Staff was outstanding. We spent two nights at TGR and found the staff incredibly helpful with all of our questions and needs. Just top notch.

Bring US$ to avoid the surcharge to your credit card. Hotel is much less fussy about the quality of the bills compared to the currency exchange locations.

Taxi drivers - be sure to take hotel-provided address business card. On two occasions we needed to direct driver back to hotel.

Room Tip: Agree with other travelers that a second floor room is preferable to the darker first floor rooms.

This governor's mansion, which once housed one of Britain's minor provincial colonial governors is a joy for the eyes. Everything is top standard in keeping with the other Orient Express (ex-Pansea)hotels I have stayed at in Asia. The pool, which is part of a reflecting pool which circles the building, provides mirror images of the house as if floating in the water. The restaurant is good, if pricey with a good and varied buffet breakfast. The Kipling Bar on the 1st floor is an extraordinary study in teakwood architecture, but during the three nights we stayed there was empty. This is a definite pamper, pricy but wonderful. We stayed on two separate occasions, and found the hotel seamlessly perfect both times.

Room Tip: Try for one of the top floor rooms, the ground floor rooms, while perfectly lovely, are dark.

Everything here was top-notch. The historic building and grounds are very beautiful, with a wonderful pool and an airy verandah on the second flool. The rooms are quite spacious and very nicely decorated. The service was really great with a consistently attentive and courteous staff all of whom werre fluent in English. The restaurant was outstanding and they even had a delicious buffet starting at 4:30 in the morning (with great dishes like lemongrass creme brulee). The only draw-back is that it's a bit out of the way and if you don't like to get taxis or guides everywhere, you're a bit stuck. However, on the whole, the place is an absolute gem and I highly recommend a stay there.

Stayed three nights on arrival in Yangon and TGR certainly lived up to expectations. Our deluxe room was spacious and comfortable, with a stone bath and lots of teak. Only criticism would be the aircon, which was noisy and made sleep impossible without earplugs. The breakfasts were superb (agree about the wonderful lemongrass creme brule and coconut panna cotta) and the inviting pool made the tropical heat just about bearable. Returned to the hotel two weeks later having completed a trip around Myanmar and stayed in room 114 - a magnificent room with much quieter aircon. Bliss - we loved it.

Room Tip: Room 114 is spacious, attractive and has a good view of the lush garden courtyard.

Just superb! We stayed there for 3 nights at the beginning of our trip. The room was great, the breakfast buffet one of the best I ever had (lemongrass creme brule and coconut panna cotta!!) and dining in the garden under the stars felt heavenly (so was the food).
A beautiful hotel that I can highly recommend with very friendly staff.
Another tip: try the Burmese Sauvignon Blanc - at least as good as the best French wine!

Stayed here after four days of traveling around Burma so that we could relax a bit before flying home. The hotel is so nice -- all dark wood and soft lighting and lush gardens. But within 15 minutes of our arrival we were jolted out of our luxe-sleepy-relaxed moods. And I know it's not fair to compare a hotel in Burma to European or American (or even other Asian) standards, even if you're paying $300 a night. But wait... On check-in the receptionist asked me if I'm pregnant (I'm not), giggling behind her hands when I said I'm not pregnant, just a bit fat (I didn't find it cute OR funny) and where we were from (while holding our passports in her hand). We headed to the bar which is beautiful, again soft lighting, glowing bottles, dark teak wood, but I couldn't hear a quarter of what my husband was saying because the three staff behind the bar (outnumbering the number of guests in the bar) were talking so loudly between themselves. The same song kept playing over and over again... The next night we moved outside the bar to the lounge because another song was playing over and over again. When you sit outside you need to get up and go to the bar to ask for the check every time.

Our room looked out onto a pathway, so if you have privacy issues ask for a room on an upper floor or with windows facing elsewhere. The rooms are cool but a bit dark, even in the afternoon with all the blinds up we needed to switch on lamps to read. The air-conditioning is pretty loud, and the light outside our room could not be switched off. It's probably still burning. Grimy corners in the wooden floors. But the absolutely most shocking thing has to be the mottled olive-green and black tub (and adjoining wall) in the bathroom. Yikes!

Okay, okay, positive things here : ) -- nice Bulgari bathroom amenities, great breakfast with ham carving, Asian and egg stations, and some amazing lounging hours by the pool after breakfast, the only place with attentive staff (even though I hesitated before putting on the bikini, you know, me and my fat ***) There's a little library if you run out of reading material. The Mandalay Sour cocktails are to die for. Just watch out if you sit outside -- mosquito cream is essential.

Cab to and from the airport is 8000 Myanmar Kyat (about $10) and two great restaurants are Le Planteur for upscale stylish dining (dinner for 2 $130) and Feel Myanmar for very very very casual but amazing local curry (lunch for 2 $9).

It's hard to find a great hotel in a much-undiscovered city -- so I really hope they try to do a bit better in terms of service...

Room Tip: If you forget mosquito repellant rub a cut lime on exposed skin (salt and tequila optional)

Dear Nextstophongkong

Thank you for taking the time to write about your experience at the Governors Residence and sorry to hear about the issues you have had.

We will of course adress these and make sure that this doesnt happen again, usually this is a big no no in local culture and comes as quite a surprise.

As for the bar and music this has been resolved with an Ipod being installed assuring a continous shuffle of different kinds of music.

All the issues mentioned will be looked at and set right as we pride ourselfs in making every effort to exceed guests expectations wherever possible.

I would like to invite you on your next visit to see for yourself on haow we have progressed on our service.

Thank you and regards
