“Great service, easy going establishment but not for light sleepers”
Reviewed 29 January 2012

I stayed here for 11 nights with 2 other close friends. Enjoyed the stay overall. Will organise my review into a couple of categories to make easier reading.

Room:
Good:
We stayed in a 3 bed room (Room 103)- one bunk and one single that was located on the Ground floor. The single bed was without a doubt the better bed. The bunk was comfy but did creak at times. Moderately sized, ondol (heated) parquet floor so we were quite warm even though it was - 10 degrees celcius outside (although some mornings were a little too warm). 4 power sockets. Sheets and blankets were clean and comfy.
Bad:
1) Well, this wasn't really bad for me but might be offsetting for older travellers or those with less strength. For this particular room, we had to go down a STEEP flight of stairs. No hassle for most part except when we had to move our luggage down and when we came back up with almost 25 kgs/ bag each. Of course, the staff do help but there is normally only one staff on duty and sometimes it is a girl or the staff may be busy.
2) The windows rattle A LOT and quite loudly. Every time a room door in the corridor is opened and shut (about 5 rooms in our corridor), the windows give off this scarily loud bang. I got used to it after a while but my cousin still got the jumps sometimes. Not the best for a light sleeper as the majority of the guests were young and were up till early morning but i think i only had 1-2 nights of disturbed sleep. Otherwise, slept throughout the night.
3) Walls are quite thin so you can hear conversations if there is a group in the room next to you. However, I only heard it some nights and there were most rooms were occupied so i think the level of sound travel depends on the guests.
4) No room service which is expected for the price. However, the rubbish bin provided was very small and we had to empty it ourselves every few days. There is a vacumn cleaner outside for communal use.

Toilet:
Good: Communal toilet but quite clean whenever I used it. No clogging. I saw the cleaning ahjumma (lady) giving it a good scrub down every morning. Hot water in the faucet came quite quickly. Can shower in the toilet as the tap had a shower head attached to it.
Bad: Toilet was at the beginning of the corridor and the corridor was freezing in comparison to our rooms. Only had to wait long once or twice (as there is only one toilet in our corridor). There is another toilet upstairs though, near the kitchen.

Shower:
Good: 2 showers. Both showers were actually back to back with a wooden screen dividing them and entrances on opposite ends. Quite clean. No clogging or rusty/ mouldy edges. Towels provided but small ones which could be washed after every use. Again, depends heavily on the users as my cousin had some incidents with hair on the floor and drain although it was clean when i used it.
Bad: Hot water was a little unpredictable. Can be very hot but then may cool off (but not cold).
Bring your own toiletries. Hairdryer provided.

Services:
24 hour entry (they gave us the code to the door lock)
Online: Replied quickly to emails. However, price quoted on website and via email was different. Via email, we were told that the price would be higher on the weekends. However, when we got there, they only charged us the weekday price and gave us a 5% discount. We didn't argue!
Laundry: Laundry service every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Clean but make sure to mark your items especially if they are common ones such as a black tee or leggings as self collection is practiced.
Staff: Very friendly and helpful. We didn't meet Danny but met Grandfather and Danny's wife who were incredibly nice and kind. They provided us with transport service to the airport bus stop as we had a lot of luggage although it was after hours (8.30 pm). They also allowed us an early check in and charged us a double room price for the triple room for the period where only 2 of us were staying. Also allowed us to store our luggage in the living room for most of the day after we checked out.
Kitchen: Morning breakfast from 8-11 am (stated online as only 8-9 am) although no strict regulations. Juice, coffee and toast (with peanut butter or jam). Communal fridge. Hot and cold water dispenser. Cutlery, toaster, microwave, small stove with pots and pans.
Telephone: Free local calls to landline in the kitchen (not handphone) and point of contact to Danny or his staff if they aren't around.
Internet: 2 public computers. Free wifi (better than major hotels who charge for wifi per computer per day)

Location:
Quite close to the subway stop (5 minutes walk). Nearby historical sites and major city points. However, further away from the exclusive part of Seoul (ie: Gangnam, Apgujeong and the like).

Room Tip: Higher floors may be better for older travelers or those who don't do well with narrow steps.

We have stayed there for 6 nights. Danny the owner picked us us at the Metro Station Exit 5 and his wife dropped us at the airport bus station when we're heading back to the airport. All of the staffs are excellent. Danny gave us a brief tips about where to go and how to go including the recommended places we haven't checked before we come here.

We stayed in the triple room which we booked by agoda then we need to extend our stays and that wouldn't be a problem for them that they suddenly checked the availability and gave us the answer right away.

As a family having my mother with me and my sister, first place I was afraid that shared bathroom would have been our issue. But the cleanliness made her feel comfortable and there are several shower room to use. ( it's autumn then and the temperature is around 0 - 5 C on the first two days but the water heat helped us)

Definitely recommended, not so crowded, good location access to the main metro station, line 4 which have many attractions along the line.

Excellent location (5 minute walk to Hansung university subway station, blue line). Small but comfy and clean rooms with TV. Quiet and friendly environment. Free breakfast (toasts and juice). The shared bathrooms are not the cleanest but reasonable. The host Danny is very nice and gives useful travel advice even for cities outside of Seoul.

However, Danny is not always present and most of the time we were relying on another staff member who perhaps wasn't as helpful as we would have hoped (she was terrible with giving directions). Also, she forgot to book two nights which we had requested for our return to Seoul, which caused some frustration and waste of time to find another guesthouse.

It's been a few months since we last stayed at Open Guest House, but I vividly remember how nice the experience was. My brother and I stayed for 9 days, and found ourselves right at home here.

Firstly, it's a big house! With clever walls and partitions. I'm quite inspired to model my home after their's for our next renovation. Danny's really a great host. He picked us up from the main road when we arrived and brought us to his quaint home in Songbuk-Dong. We arrived close to midnight, but he still took EVERY EFFORT to make sure we were settled in, and that we were armed with enough information/maps/recommendations to make plans for the next day.

Breakfast was self-service - they have a really nice smelling kitchen, btw.
Drinking water, hot or cold, readily available. There's also juice and milk, and toast every morning. The kitchen was a good place for us to catch up with other travelers and to share our experiences and plans. It sounds simple, but it's really a warm touch compared to what you'll get at hotels.

The subway station is just a few minutes walk down the road, and in the nearby vicinity you have great food all over the place. Kongbul, fried chicken, street food, fast food, coffee places,.. The area is home to a few universities, so the main street is quite alive till late evening. Open Guesthouse doesn't get the noise. It's amidst a quiet and safe residential place. :)

Honestly, though, what made our stay so memorable was having such a nice place to call home during our stay. Danny's family are a bunch of really friendly, warm, genuine people who will make you feel welcome in a foreign land. Highly recommend them!!

Cheers

Room Tip: If you need a quiet space to rest, opt for the double room in the separate wing! :)

Our 7 night stay at Open Guest House was excellent. The best part was the owner who gave excellent advice and was always willing to help. His wife picked us up from the airport bus stop and he dropped us off stop on our way home. The staff member who is present at nights is also very friendly and helpful.
The place is not a party hostel and that suited us well. It is well-located, a short distance from a subway station on a very useful line. Near the hostel there is plenty to eat. Just ask which direction to go. It's next to a section of the fortress wall which used to encircle the old city of Seoul and you can begin your walk around this wall right our side the front gate. Our only complaints are the lack of an AC in our room while we were there (it was being fixed) and a guest early on in our stay who came back drunk some nights and made a lot of noise (talking and snoring loudly and banging into things).
There is a free laundry service on 3 days per week too, which is excellent!

Room Tip: Upstairs may be a good in case of loud guests.

Not enough can be said about this place. I have stayed here on 3 occasions and each time I have felt extremely welcome. Danny is an amazing host who is there to help with anything you need. He helped us book a skiing trip, recommended places to eat, places to hang out indoors (it was -17C ouside) and recommended treks when the weather was better. The place itself has a nice communal area and kitchen and rooms on 3 levels. The rooms downstairs are somewhat noisy - but this greatly depends on how considerate fellow guests are. Upstairs it is quiet. The rooms were clean as were the communal bathrooms. There are plenty of bars and restaurants about 10 minutes away from the guest house. Furthermore, this place offers a free laundry service with most items being ready in 10 hours. Again, I would highly recommend this to anyone seeking a sociable atmosphere, clean rooms and a very friendly host who has a heart of gold.

We stayed at the Open Guest House for three nights in October at the start of a two week road trip around South Korea. We arrived without knowing that it was a hostel but Danny (who runs the Guest House with his family) and his family put us at ease immediately and ensured that we had the most comfortable stay. Danny spoke excellent English and helped us organise many aspects of our trip over the course of the two weeks - including booking the DMZ tour for us, arranging a ginseng tour in Geumsan for us, and booking tickets for us to watch a performance in Seoul. As few people in South Korea spoke English, his help was invaluable.

The hostel was also extremely clean and cozy, with breakfast (peanut butter and jam, toast, and coffee) and laundry included. There is also high speed wifi in the hostel, and two communal computers in the living area. The hostel is also conveniently located less than five minutes walk from the subway station (Hanyang University) and only a ten minutes or so subway journey from many tourist attractions (very close to Dongdaemun!). All in all we had a lovely stay and would highly recommend it!
