The Hostel seems nice and cosy, mainly because it is well located. Smokers only. Once you're in bed your body itches everywhere and it isn't only because of the mosquitos; a thing we experienced only at this place. The private bathroom was incredibly small. The owner of this place seems very nice and mainly honest, advising us not to trust in anybody, but the very first thing he did was lying to us, offering his tours for our first day in Cairo, which were at least twice more expensive than the average, saying that we would not find any better offer. Luckily we met real honest egyptian people later on.

Room tip: We were supposed to have the best room.. my body still itches, quite noisy.

We booked this hostel before we arrived in Cairo, and we found a relaxed haven with nice rooms and friendly people located in a historical building, which adds to the whole experience of staying at African House.
They clean every day and make great coffee. Always someone at reception, tours as you wish. Great sitting room, TV and good WiFi. No power cuts and hot water 25h a day.
Perfect place.

The place is well located in the heart of Cairo. It is lead by Ahmed and his colleagues/employees who are all very friendly and helpful. To get there from the airport you better take a taxi (about 120 EGP) or arrange transportation with Ahmed before. Bus stops not very close to the property, about 30 min walk (information from Ahmed).
Room was big and comfy, with a bathroom. Modest but functioning. It was clean, no roaches. Towels and cosmetics were not provided. Hot water was available however it's pressure was not high. Breakfast served every day, good enough (fresh bread, cream cheese and jam) however I dreamt about more "Egyptian style" food.
Very cosy common space! Complimentary Egyptian tea available on request.
Ahmed organized us a day Cairo tour, and at the end we requested another day... Cairo is too much interested to have 1 day enough. Sabri, the guide was kind and happy to share his knowledge. It was a very valuable time for us. Price for 1 day (driver, car, guide) was 30 euro. Tickets for museums and mosques were paid by us separately. Ahmed offered also other kind of trips (Nile trip, Giza pyramids etc.) but we had different plans.
I also highly value that all African House people were helpful but not pushy.
If I am back to Cairo, I'd back to African House.

This place is super basic and a bit shabby (which is part of the charm), super clean, nice and comfortable. It's located in an old magnificent building in the centre of Cairo. Very close to very busy super fun streets to see how the real Cairo rolls in a day to day life and walking distance to the museum. Rooms are incredibly big. The mattress was comfy and the pillow was like a brick but we left with the promise of new ones :) which brings me to the amazing staff, they are genuinely friendly and they'll do their best to help. They are there for you 24/7 too. You can book with them, they are honest and are really working to get you the best deal. To leave your stuff in the room is safe but they have a safe box too.

If you are looking for a fancy modern hostel this is not the place, go somewhere else but you are missing out :P

Well located, but somehow quiet at night (our room gave on the court), the hotel has a cosy, relaxed vibe. The rooms aren't new but they are very clean, the only thing that would deserve a change are the pillows, very hard, but I guess it is subjective, and we didn't think of asking them for softer pillows until after we left, so maybe it is on us! Which brings me to the service, really attentive and pleasant. The guys were always helpful, don't be afraid to ask them for anything (towels, toilet paper... ) and they will get it for you. The breakfast is very simple (tea, bread, cheese and jam) but does the trick. They did propose us some tours, but were not pushy about it. And when we did book a driver through them for a day tour to Saqqara, they asked us our opinion and when we told them that the driver was ok, but that we weren't 100% happy with him (he tried to rush a bit), they listened and told us they wouldn't be working with the guy anymore, really worrying about you being satisfied, great attitude overall. Thanks Akhmed for all the help.
