Owner description: Once known as the Roman stronghold of Babylon, Cairo’s oldest section is the ancient heart of the Coptic Christian community featuring five original churches, the first mosque built in Egypt and the oldest synagogue, all representing three of the major world religions.

This is an area rich in history. From the Babylon fortress, the hanging church to the Ben Ezra synagogue. The lanes have hundreds of books on offer at decent prices. It’s is also a haven for cat lovers like a lot of places in Cairo. Cats and kittens stroll the lanes majestically and one can see they are well taken care of.

This is a great old area if Cairo where you can feel the diversity. Coptic churches, mosque, synagogue all in one place. The hanging church of my our Saint Mary, Greek Orthodox Church, and Ben Ezra Synagogue are all worth seeing. The book store in the alley is very interesting, wish I could spend more time there.

. It is the place where you can visit: the hanging church, Abu Serga church, Ben Ezra synagogue, the coptic museum, etc..
So make a 3-4 hrs available..
. This place shows the diversity in Egypt..
. It has a nice & calm environment..
. Abu Serga church is a must.. It is built at the site where the holy family lived for several months..

you really feel you are back in time in those small alleys, and the small hidden churches. So much history in a small area and it is well protected and safe.

The whole area is very old and religious, great sense of history from the hanging church, Coptic orthodox cathedral, the synagogue and Roman ruins. Area is relatively small but jammed packed with history, security all over the area. There is also an amazing book store through the streets which a must stop and have a look. Must do whilst in Cairo.
