Our family of three (including our 4 year old son) stayed at Offbeat Mara for 4 nights in mid-December as the last part of a 10 night safari trip. This was our first time in Kenya and on a safari. Offbeat Mara is a very special place in a unique location that manages to provide luxury and comfort without forgetting that there is something important about also experiencing (rather than just shutting out) the bush even after you get out of the safari vehicle at camp.

We stayed in family tent #5 complete with separate bedroom area for our son. Everything was well appointed and clean. The bathroom had a flush toilet and there were 2 sinks that they supplied with water throughout the day (including warm water in the mornings). The shower is a “bucket shower” but is fully enclosed within the tent and filled with hot water at whatever time of day you prefer. Laying on our bed with screens up we could enjoy watching zebra and other animals in the field right in front of the camp.

The chef at the camp is incredible and we thoroughly enjoyed all of the food. I would not be able to decide which I enjoyed more: the meals on the beautiful porch under the trees, those on game drives with animals always in view, or the very special candlelit bush dinner we hiked to on our last night. The animal viewing was exceptional and, truth be told, we ended up never venturing into the actual national park. There was nothing we missed with close encounters with lions, leopards, elephants, wildebeest, hyena (and so much more!) and baby animals of every variety to boot. In the Mara proper, you might have to compete with many other vehicles and are more limited on where you can take a vehicle. In the North Conservancy we had a much more intimate and flexible experience. The most special was to be able to do night drives where we witnessed lions hunting and other creatures that can only be seen in the dark-- aardwolf, bush babies, civets.

The atmosphere they create at the camp and the experiences they offer are wonderful. But what really sets it apart is the amazing staff. Our driver and spotter were David and Kapen and we really couldn't say enough good things about them. Incredibly knowledgeable and friendly, they treated us like friends. Beyond the wealth of information about the wildlife, it was a unique opportunity to learn about the Maasai people and culture as well. The managers Kim, Jesse and Chania are top notch. They were always present and helpful with every effort made to make our experience the best possible. We were impressed with how smoothly everything ran and how organized they were. Kim helped us to arrange our days in ways that were flexible for our young son, and also made sure we covered everything there was to do and see. Our son adored her and she was very generous to play with him at camp (along with Dipstick, one of the adorable dog residents) so that my husband and I could do the game walks with Jesse. Offbeat Mara is very lucky to have this option of a specially trained guide/manager who can safely and knowledgeably take visitors on hikes in the bush close to large animals. We are so happy we stayed at Offbeat and would not think of staying anywhere else in the Mara if we returned.

A really authentic safari experience saw all the game we wanted thanks to Joseph. Well looked after by Jessie and the crew, great company and good food. Cannot recommend it enough for that in the wild feeling with tents and no internet.

The Offbeat Mara Camp experience exceeded the wildest expectations that I had before venturing on this trip!!
It started with Patrick who collected and returned us to our hotel in Nairobi from the Domestic Airport. Patrick was informative, punctual and very helpful. We were greeted at the airstrip in the conservatory by a big welcome and smile from Stanley, our guide for the 4.5 days.
We saw the big 5 on our drive from the airstrip to the camp and pretty much on all the other twice daily drives. Stanley was attentive to our needs, made sure that we got to see as much wildlife as we could and had a wealth of information regarding the animals. I couldn’t imagine that we could safely get as close to the big 5 as we did. It was both exhilarating and frightening at the same time.
Watching the sunsets out in the Masai Mara with a glass of wine was breathtaking. The camp is secluded from other sites and the animals can walk freely around the tents, not for the fainthearted!!
We stayed in tent 7 – the beds were comfortable and there was a great cross breeze at night. The lions used the path in front of our tent to get to the other side of the river and the elephants would sneak up at night to feed in the trees behind the tent. If you want that personal up close experience then Tent 3 also has great animal viewing.
The food was delicious and plentiful and the drinks were great. All the staff were friendly and engaging.
The 2 managers, Jessie and Kim were fabulous. They ensured that you received the most out of your safari experience and were always available. We had some great conversations over meals and by the camp fire.
A special thanks to Willi and the men that did rounds at night to ensure our safety. They all had a laugh at the barrier that I made at night with the outside furniture to protect against any unwanted intruders.
We also visited the Masai Village which was well worth the experience!
It was with a pang in my heart when we were leaving the camp and had to say our goodbyes.

Room tip: Recommend night drive. WiFi intermittent. Bring swift power charger with multiple access (12000mAh) for your camera/mobile.

We have just spent 4 nights at this fantastic camp and wish we had found it before. From arriving at camp and being met by Jessie, Kim and Dipstick the dog you immediately feel relaxed. Nothing is too much trouble the staff are so helpful and always smiling, we had tent 3 which we had requested from reading reviews as it has great views across the valley. We had elephants, giraffe, buffalo and hippo's walking right outside of the tent so you didn't need to go far for game viewing, the food is delicious and a good variety. The amount of wildlife is fantastic lions and cubs ,cheetahs, leopards, hippos, giraffes and so much more, we were so lucky to see 3 kills in 4 days, Joseph our driver/guide was so good at finding animals and so knowledgeable. We did a night game drive which was well worth it to see some of the nocturnal animals and also we did a walking safari with Jessie which was so enjoyable especially when we came across the lioness and 2 males so had to change our route. Bush breakfasts are the best. out in the wild with animals all around to watch If you only ever get one chance to do a safari this is the place to stay. Thank you to everyone there who made it so memorable and we're saving for our next visit.

Room tip: tent 3 has great views and tent 7 has quite a bit of close up animals
