I have just returned from a 10 day safari at Basecamp Explorer's amazing camps adjoining the Maasai Mara National Reserve. All of their camps have a mix of character comfort and luxury, they are located in areas rich in wildlife and are run by local Maasai people. Unique in so far as camps are located in the Naboisho Conservancy where there are few vehicles and little disturbance to wildlife, so sightings are exclusive, and if its the migration you wish to see they are ideally placed for this wildlife spectacular. There are 4 camps namely Basecamp Maasai Mara, Wilderness Camp, Eagle View and a new flagship camp Leopard Hill. I found the service excellent, staff are friendly and the food is delicious. Safaris are a big part of my life, I love being in the wild and Basecamp Explorer offer fantastic experiences at an affordable price, I must thank Evelyne in the Nairobi office for organising this my 4th visit. I would recommend visiting these camps to anyone, they provide fantastic game drives and excellent guiding, you will see all the very best wildlife here, amazing viewing of the big 5 and more with big cats galore, see my photos. Sincere thanks to everyone here who helped make my safari so wonderful.

Room tip: The Obama Room at Basecamp is the best, but all rooms have fantastic settings

Dear Leo,

There’s nothing we love more than hearing from our guests, it was such a pleasure to read your review! The whole team really enjoyed hearing about your experience, from the service we provided you to your amazing feedback on your drives. The ability to move from one Basecamp safari camp to another gives you a better chance to experience a safari in a whole new level you get to see the local villages, cattle herders, vast savannah, and variety of wildlife. Each individual camp has its unique features that expose you to a distinct feeling of the Mara. Once you conclude the Basecamp circle, you will have a hard choice to make, which one was your favorite, we are glad you got to experience it all. Thank you too for your kind recommendation, it truly means a great deal and we just hope that we might have the opportunity to welcome you back to Basecamp and make your stay even more memorable.

We stayed the first three nights in Basecamp Masai Mara, before continuing to Wilderness Camp and Eagle View.
Everything was very well organised, stuff so friendly and helpful, they really make you feel at home here too, even if this is a bigger camp than the others we visited.
Very good food and service everywhere and great Masai guards taking care of security at nights. Nice well equipped tent with terrace, we could watch different birds and animals from there already. Such a great start for our game drives with our fantastic guide Manfred. He has lots of knowledge of the nature, is a good driver and just a great person, who had patience with us taking pictures with "baby camera", meaning huge lenses! :)
We experienced and saw a lot of wildlife, different species of animals and birds. One of the most dramatic experiences was a lioness killing a baby giraffe. But everything in and around Masai Mara is interesting for us who love the birds and animals and the beautiful nature. Every day there's something exciting to see.

A visit to the Masai village was a fantastic experience. Great to see that Masai people can keep their culture alive. That's what makes so big difference for us tourists coming to stay in camps like Basecamp, we really appreciate the way they give work to local people, for women too.
Then there's the tree planting around, which makes the camp so green and there are lots of life because of that. Hopefully the trees we planted there will grow big too, and we will see them one day when back again.
Thank you for your great hospitality.

We only spent one night here and I wish it had been longer. The camp is new and the highlight is the tent roof which you can open to view the stars at nighttime. Staff were lovely, it was good to be driven around by the Maasai who are knowledgeable and friendly. The conservancy is much les busy than the main Mara as it’s only a few camps here. I would recommend staying here for a few nights if you can!

I loved my tent.. way beyond my expectations of safety and comfort. The Massia who guarded the tents helped me feel extra safe because I was solo in my tent..and the chef bringing the meals was caring and attentive to make sure we liked our soup and dinner and dessert. The hospitality was top of the line! all smiles

We had 3 tents at Basecamp, Eagleview & Wilderness. Basecamp staff was wonderful. From the moment we stepped off the plane and began our journey with Lona to our 6 wonder days of game drives with John, the trip was perfect. We enjoyed 2 game drives a day.

Basecamp is beautiful set along a small stream, where you constantly saw animals grazing. The food was outstanding and the waitstaff great. Showers are a great end to a day of traveling with hot water plentiful.

As special treat on cool nights is the hot water bottle placed in your bed. Amazing how it keeps you warm.

Eagleview is a quiet gem, nestled on a hillside overlooking a watering hole. Tents are spaciously placed apart. Again, hot water is plentiful. Food was delicious as you enjoyed the view. The night time sounds of animals sung us to eagleview is in the Conservation and thus more enjoyable with less vehicles and lots of various animals.

Wilderness is a rustic camp which puts you in the heart of Africa. This is a little rougher with more tent camping than glamping like the other two. Hot water for showering is uopn request, but comes easily and actually lasts longer than one would think. Animals are closer and we enjoyed zebras 10 ft from our tent grazing. Food was delicious as expected.

Our driver, John, was outstanding. His knowledge and humor was enjoyable. He made each day special and never disappointed us with our animal viewing.

I highly recommend Basecamp explorer. They are community oriented and use locals to staff.
