I would travel back to Beijing just to stay at this hotel. It is located in a hutong area down a small alley. It is walking distance to many restaurants and central for sightseeing in beijing. The hotel is small and the design and decor is beautiful. As soon as we checked in we extended an extra night. We loved the bar area which was trendy and we had our nightly drink before dinner, snuggle with one of the cats and got to have a chat with one of the friendly staff members. They were so happy to help us with any request we had and to suggest places to go. My partner and I had a wonderful special stay here and would love to be back there soon.

Perfect location in the Hutong, on a quiet little street, mod-eco design, great service, clean if small rooms. No air conditioning so we were told to sleep with the windows open if we didn't want to stifle. Every one of the rooms faces the little courtyard where the German women were having their wine until 12:30am last night and the loud-mouthed American gay couple has been having their morning smoke from 7am on. Everyone might as well be In bed with us. I would definitely consider staying here again if I was deaf.

Small hotel, hidden away in the Hutong area. Walking distance to the main bars/restaurants. Room was very spacious, double bed and also another bed/settee for our son. Apple TV was a great touch, giving you loads of viewing options. Breakfast was a very different experience to the usual buffet style, which was great. Wi-fi very quick and built in VPN, which in China is a real plus.
Food could be ordered into the hotel from the many restaurants outside and the staff couldn't have been more helpful and were always happy for a chat

The downsides, the room was too hot, and I can understand this is a personal view, and some people will say too cold!!! The problem was you could not control the heat, as the floor heating was centrally controlled. They don't switch on the air-con until May, when the summer really
starts. We only had a small window in the bathroom, which when opened, helped, but was not
enough for us.
The only other point to raise, the bar area looked a great place to enjoy a nice glass of wine, however, the hotel has resident cats, so if you are allergic to cats, as both my husband and son are, sitting in there was not an option for us
But overall, fabulous, and if we come to Beijing again, we would stay there again. The main chain hotels are outside of the centre, so this was the perfect choice for us to be able to explore on foot

My fourth time in Beijing, decided to try something besides the Chinese interpretation of a large western hotel (marble lobbies, etc.). Orchid is a terrific alternative - small, peaceful, and serene. Great service all around - breakfasts were much better than the usual "buffets" at the large hotels. We enjoyed a 'garden' room - the garden being a small courtyard like space with a spot to sit. As others have mentioned, the beds are exceptionally comfortable!

Mr. Shi's dumplings across the street is great - although filled with international students, the food is quite authentic and Yanjing beer is on tap.

Three things that prevent me from giving an "excellent" rating: (a) The entrance is down a narrow walkway off the street, and crowded with bikes, trash, and food waste (!) from the adjacent restaurant. (b) The credit card processing system was not working during our stay, so bills had to be settled either with cash or via Paypal. (c) The airport transfers were handled competently, but the vehicles were old and smelled a bit of cigarette smoke - no better than a Beijing taxicab.

Despite these minor issues we would definitely return to the Orchid.

Another five star review for The Orchid. We wanted to stay in an interesting area but have a comfortable place to return to at the end of the night. We wanted a staff that would hold our hands through the culture shock of a first trip to China. That's exactly what we got.

We stayed here for five nights in March and can't imagine staying anywhere else. As everyone else has said, it is located in the baochao hutong area, giving you a little oasis inside the excitement of the neighborhood - a much more interesting way to experience Beijing than staying in some large western chain hotel in Sanlitun. The Orchid itself is incredibly comfortable. Great room, apple TV, free wifi, great breakfast, amazing bed. The feel of the place is not so much "hotel" as "hip B&B", with a friendly international staff that's ready to help you with anything you need, but not breathing down your neck like some B&B's. They helped us navigate Beijing, set up reservations for us, did our laundry, gave us food recommendations, etc. Absolutely fantastic.
