Happy Dragon Courtyard Hostel

This hostel is located in a great spot for tourists being near a subway station and a few major attractions. The hostel itself is located inside a fairly traditional looking hutong where cars are not allowed (although I did still see cars every now and then driving through). Although our taxi driver from the airport had likely never spoken a word of English in his life we had the address printed out in Chinese and he got us there with no trouble.

The staff consists of a bunch of cute Chinese girls who all speak English and are very friendly and helpful. When we arrived we found the lock on our door was broken. We told one of the girls about the problem, some men immediately arrived and started fixing the lock. The staff will also help you book tours. I was happy that the tour we booked through happy dragon did not include factory visits, which is a scam that is all to common in asia.

The girls also run a restaurant/bar/cafe type establishment in the courtyard. The meals are good and priced well.

Highly recommended.

I travel and work a lot in China and really like it. I have been here six times, staying two to three month every time. I am quiet used to different noises and smells in China. This said, I will start my review on this hutong hotel: If you just come here for a couple of days to visit Beijing as a tourist, it is a very nice place to stay. The subway is around the corner, you can walk to some good restaurants, there is a bakery and shopping places close by.
But if you are planning to stay here while you are on a business trip - like me - it can get quiet annoying. The hutong hostel is really beautiful, rooms are ok, even though the bathrooms smell bad like in most hutongs, food is good and the staff is nice and tries to help a lot. But like often in China, there is more staff then guests. So the cafe/restaurant where you have to sit, if you need to work (no desk and chair in the rooms) is usually full with staff people. Sometimes as a guest you actually have to sit in a not so nice place, because all the nice couches and good chairs are taken by members of the staff. Staff people are constantly walking in and out of the cafe, slamming the door or leaving it open (it was really cold while I was there and I usually had to get up to close the door more then 10 times during a day there. Asking staff people to please close the door behind them, because it is freezing didn't help, they just kept forgetting when they walked out.) Some of them also bring friends to hang out together here or to play table tennis. The table tennis is another thing. I never saw one of the guest play it, because it was constantly taken by staff members. They sometimes played from morning till late afternoon when it got dark. Since the table tennis is right next to the glass wall of the cafe you have a full day of table tennis noises. Also if your room is on the side of the table tennis you will hear the noise all day accompanied by the screaming and cheering by the staff and their friends. I don't want to sound small-minded, but this was sometimes just a little too much when I had to finish some work on the computer. Since there was no other cafe near by I started to travel 30 to 45 minutes every morning to the next cafe with wifi to be able to work. In total: I would come back as a tourist, but not, if I have to work here.
