Reviewed 30 June 2012

Get a birds eye view of the Forbidden city and Beihai Park. There is much history here as well, so read before you go to get the most out of this promontory. Personally this should be a part of the forbidden city tour. So just keep going once you've crossed the moat of the forbidden city.

“Good, but not Mutianyu :P”
Reviewed 16 May 2012

Two years previously I visited Mutianyu section. Because Mutianyu is much quieter I was shocked by the vast amount of Chinese tourists there were beetling their way up the wall.

The climb is steep but reasonably short. Worth it for the view though!

If you can get yourself there without a guide I'd advise you to do so. Organised tours that offer Ming Tombs, Great Wall, Silk factory all in a day etc will over charge on everything where possible. Bring water and food with you too. Food is comparatively expensive there and only small snacks are available. In the summer it will be scorching too so bring whatever you need to deal with that.

The downside is the huge crowds. The entrance road is too narrow for the coaches that were trying to arrive by the hundred. Eventually we got out and walked along the side of the highway to get there. Those hundreds of coaches turn into thousands of people, all shoving there way through the bottle necks of the wall's steeper parts. Towards the top though the crowds thin.

Overall a pleasant experience but there's no point in coming here when Mutianyu has a cable car if you would like, is wider, meaning no one is jacking anyone elses photos and the best bit - it;s FAR less busy.

“Bucket list, schmucket list, this is something you should do!”
Reviewed 23 April 2012

Come on! Freeways are easier to spot from outer space (they're wider). Bribery got troups through the walls in the times attacks failed. And "great" in Chinese is also translated as "long". But long wall or great wall, it is still a thrill to walk the ramparts and watch the wall undulate over the rugged peaks and deep ravines. And maybe just as fun was the dozens of Chinese who asked to have their pictures taken with us. It's a tough hike in places, but it is also the walk of a lifetime.

“Beautiful and Scenic”
Reviewed 18 March 2012

It takes a long time to get out there, but it's worth it for the beauty of this section of the wall. There were villagers who followed us all the way along the wall and helped us to climb. They sell you souvenirs at the end, but it was worth it to have sort of your own personal guides.
