Is a quite charming place. The staff is very knowledgeable about hiking and exploring nearby places. Family dinner was great. The owner knows a lot about Chinese culture all over the country and can recommend places all over the world to see.

Last month, I travel to the Gubeikou to climb the Great Wall, before that I booked the Great Wall Box, they helped me a lot ,they even explained the map in order that I know the right path, what they were very nice is that when it was approaching evening , they called me to check whether I was lost when I was still on the wall, although I was not lost at all, but that made me feel they really care me like a friend~

Room Tip: The five people room is great!~~ Do not know the others

If you plan on doing the Great Wall, and don't want a crowded, over-touristed experience, then definitely come here. The views from both major Wall hikes are amazing, and our group from the hostel were literally the only people on the wall. Strongly recommend staying long enough to do two hikes (we did one night and got both in). One to the East of a well-preserved and easy to walk part and one to the West which is a lot more challenging but well worth the fantastic views. The hostel itself is nice, with simple rooms, comfortable beds, and decent food (which is basically your only option in town). The only negative was that there was a lot of cats, but even with allergies it was not an issue.

A friend and I spent the night here recently and were pleasantly surprised at how nice the facility was and how friendly the staff was. Joe and crew were helpful in every way from checking in, to finding food in the little nearby village, to planning hiking routes. If you are looking for a retreat from the big city or trying to find a good stretch of remote Great Wall to hike this is your place. I plan on returning many times.

From the very first moment Joe and Sophie (that's their English names) made me feel incredibly welcome! Also, the place in itself is beatiful and the Great wall is literally next door (my room was situated 2 inches from a part of the wall). I hiked the wall several times, at the sunset, in the afternoon, at sunrise...most of the time I saw no other pople (except Sophie who accompanied me!! ). I ended up stayin a week, it was just so very relaxing, beautiful and friendly. Some evenings we all had dinner together (guests and staff), at other times they would invite me to a special tea or wine...I'm most defenitiely coming back!!

For anyone looking to see the Great Wall of China without the crowds, I couldn’t recommend a stay at Great Wall Box House highly enough. Although it takes a little longer to reach (the hostel is not in Beijing, but in Gubeikou, a village around 2 hours from the airport), it is well worth the effort to go a litter farther. The hostel is located very close to unspoiled sections of the Wall – part of it even runs through the yard - and there are incredible hiking trails leading straight from the village along miles and miles of original sections of the Wall. There are no touts, no ski lifts or cable cars, and no stalls selling souvenirs (or even water for that matter, so make sure to pack some for your trek!). You can hike the length of it for a whole day and see very few people. It is also possible to reach Jinshanling and continue on to the popular hike to Simatai in one day if you make an early start (though Simatai was partly closed at the time we visited).

The double room was very cosy and tastefully decorated, and even had its own fireplace. The beds are very comfortable – just what you need after a day’s hiking. But what made this place really stand out was the combination of the modern amenities and comforts you’d find in a modern hotel with hostel-like informality and character. Joe is an excellent host and really makes you feel at home, as well as providing lots of useful tips on the best hiking trails. The home cooked meals in the evening were delicious and provided a good opportunity to socialise with the other guest and share travel tips.

I moved to Gubeikou Great Wall after traveling to lots of different types of the Great Wall: 1, Gubeikou Great Wall is the wild wall connected with Jinshanling Great Wall and Simatai Great Wall. 2, Our house is located in the countryside, not in DOWNTOWN Beijing. 3, If you want to experience REAL and WILD Great Wall, Gubeikou is the one what you must do. Situated in Gu Bei Kou, just 50-metres away from the Great Wall, this friendly house features modern architecture, as well as free Wi-Fi and free parking. Featuring stone walls and wooden furnishings, heated rooms come with Great Wall views. There are shared bathroom and heated toilet facilities in the courtyard. The Great Wall Box House (Beijing) offers outdoor seating in the courtyard, a kitchen and a common dining area. Local Chinese dishes are cooked daily by the property.
