This is a great location to try Chinese food on the way from the Forbidden City. People don't really speak English, but you can ask for an English menu and choose anything you like.

We were the only foreigners here when we visited on a warm September day but there is an English menu if you need it. The dumplings are cheap & tasty & ours arrived relatively quickly despite the brisk trade that the place was doing. They do serve other food too & cold beers are available. Recommended.

We arrived back to Beijing from Shenyang on a rainy evening feeling a bit hungry but not wanting a full meal. We decided to go to this steamed bun shop after walking by several times during previous days. According to my wife, it's part of a huge chain across the city. It's a definitely a no frills establishment with communal seating which may scare off some tourists. Anyway, we bought a dozen buns, two red bean congees and a can of Yanjing beer for less than 10 USD!

Try this shop for a taste of genuine non touristy food. Plus, they offer carry-out if sitting in their dining area isn't appealing. Btw, keep in mind that Chinese language fluency is a must. Fwiw, the family decided the dill pork filled bun was the best.

We at here four times within three days... no frills.. quick service and pretty decent food. Had the pork baos and pork dumplings. Imagine three people having a meal within 40 rmb. One great point is they open at 630 I think... so great for a breakfast to go! We at at 7 am once.

Just across the Main Street from the jw Marriott central Beijing is a local restaurant with amazing steamed buns and wontons. It was a good thing they had a menu in English so that you can point to what looked good. Had 2 millet soups, seaweed wonton soup, saluted vegetables, steamed shrimp chive buns and steamed pork buns for 32 yen. The wontons and steamed buns were delicious! Saw a table that ordered a full plate of wontons...want to order that the next time we come. And we will definitely be back.
