Lots of shops at the Shopping Street. It is very near to Qianmen and worth visiting. Try going to the smaller streets too as there are more things to be seen there.

I spend a lot of my childhood in Qianmen Area, it used be a lot different, if you visit Tiananmen square, its a nice walk around the area, avoid the main shopping street, go into the small alleys.

Based on our research, there are various ways to reach Tiananmen Square (Guang Chang) 天安門 - Qianmen station on line 2 is at the southern end of the square, while Tiananmen East and Tiananmen West, both on line 1, are at the northern end.

We started our day at Qian Men and in my opinion, that is a great start to learn about and get a little more in-dept about the history. Also, you can simply continue walking North towards Chairman Mao’s memorial hall, Tiananmen and eventually reaching the Forbidden City. Qian Men or “Zhengyangmen” is actually situated at the south of Tiananmen Square and is the building which was restricted only to the Emperor for prayers, Empress (only on her wedding day) and the scholars - 状元 (only on the day they were selected).

It was where the Emperor in those days go to to pray for the country – for the wealth, health and prosperity of ancient China. It is afterall situated on the 龙脉 of China (i.e pulse of the dragon – reflecting good fengshui). We paid a very fair price for a guided tour at one of the booths and she gave us a good download of the history and background of Zhengyangmen – a 4 storey building. We walked the path once taken by the Emperor. It was certainly an enriching history lesson and a great experience for me.

This street is nice to look at, but the shopping might be a bit so-so. Use this street as a navigation point to find the fun side streets where more interesting shopping can be found.

It's really just a shopping street - visit the hutongs either side for some more unique shopping experiences.
