We stayed at the Hotel Icon for 5 days on the way home from a round the world trip with our 3 year old, 15 month old and my first-time-to-Hong-Kong parents.
The hotel is attached to a hospitality school and is obviously aimed at the business market. It is very modern with very well appointed rooms, restaurants, gym and pool and spa.
Thanks to the hospitality school, there are staff everywhere but at no point did I feel hovered over. There is always an experienced staff member on hand to help if someone needed to help but only once did we have a problem (with a drink order taking 30 minutes to arrive) and once we complained, the supervisor stepped in and sorted the situation to our satisfaction.
I was a little worried when we arrived that our kids would not be catered for but the staff were beyond helpful. From highchairs/booster seats and loan strollers to daily surprises of cupcakes or toys delivered to our room, we were overjoyed at the effort they went to to make the kids feel welcome.
The pool is not overly little kid friendly but it was more than adequate and the staff at the pool fetched highchairs for poolside lunches and seemed to pay extra attention when the kids were around the pool. Our kids spent quite a bit of time in the outdoor gym shower which (since it was not used once whilst we were there), doubled as a wading pool and fountain!
We stayed in a harbour view room with an adjoining room for the kids. My 3 year old was overjoyed at her king sized bed and there was plenty of room for a cot. The kids were delighted with the view of the light show before they went to bed at night and the bath was so deep not even my monkey 15 month old could climb out.
We used a Hotel Icon babysitter on 2 occasions. This lady was amazing. My sometimes clingy 3 year old was enthralled with her within 5 minutes and actually only gave me a fleeting wave when it was time for us to go. She was also saintlike when my 15 month old would not sleep on the night we did not get home until well after midnight. He might not have gone to sleep but he was entertained and happy and that was really nice to come home to.
My parents had not been to Hong Kong before so the location was important. I was worried we were a little too far from the waterfront and harbour but it was an easy and pleasant walk. They also have a shuttle bus doing laps of the important places if you did not want to walk.
The concierge were fabulous making bookings at restaurants we did not think we would get into at short notice as well as recommending places to eat nearby. They were also helpful organising tours for Mum and Dad.
The food was nothing spectacular but there was a good choice and the breakfast buffet was one of the best I've seen for a small hotel. Mind you, due to not wanting to put the kids with a babysitter for a 3rd night (!) we did not get to eat at Above and Beyond which is their signature restaurant. I have heard good reports about it and will definitely make that a priority next time.
We had a dedicated housekeeping person for our floor. I assume each floor would have one. It was really lovely to have some one get to know our needs and remember them each day. We could also make small requests direct to him rather than having to call housekeeping. This was great for extra things we needed for the kids.
The spa is an Angsana by Banyan Tree spa which is Thai. It took me a second to adjust when I was greeted with 'Sawatdee Kah'! It was beautifully appointed and the staff were most professional and really good at what they do.
We would stay again as a family, we would stay if travelling as a couple (maybe upgrade to a suite on the club floor) and my husband is definitely going to stay for business next time he is in Hong Kong.
