Owner description: Located on Lantau Island, this monastery features the Big Buddha (Tiantau), which is the largest, seated, outdoor bronze Buddha in the world.

Amazing views and beautiful buildings in amongst the greenery. We hiked up from Tung Chung station which was quite an undertaking (9km mostly uphill involving lots and lots of steps). The hike took us 4 hours but was very rewarding as we came over the top and started to see the Big Buddha poking out of the verdant trees. The Buddha was well worth a visit and the monastery was picturesque, serene and tranquil with colourful traditional buildings and the scent of incense wafting around. Note that it shuts at 6pm and the queues to get the bus or cable car back down are considerable (maybe 1 hour plus on a weekend).

The Po Lin Monastry is located at the foot of the giant Buddha. The building is very beautiful and they also provide a vegetarian lunch for their visitors. An interesting experience that you should endeavor to do.

Following a visit to Big Buddha (currently pictured here, think photos have been swoped, we visited the Monastery which is also spectacular and stopped for lunch at the vegetarian cafe - good quality tasty food which is inexpensive.
