My wife and I recently dined at Sole Mio on a Sunday night in May 2017. We were looking for a casual Italian dinner and Sole Mio's name came recommended on TripAdvisor and several of the other food blogs that we were browsing.

We were staying at the Admiralty area and so Sole Mio (just off the mid-levels escalators) was not difficult to access. From Central MTR, it's about 12-15 minutes along the mid-levels escalators - you just need to know where to get off (i.e. along Elgin Street) and it's on the upper ground floor, easily accessible by elevator.

On the Sunday night that we visited, there was a big family of about 10 guests, as well as another couple dining - so it was actually a fairly quiet evening at Sole Mio.

The menu is extensive and we decided on 3 dishes - an appetizer (Calamari Fritti, which was served with lemon mayo and a spicy tomato sauce), a pasta (Sole Mio Linguine, which was served with a king prawn) and a pizza (Parmese, which was a tomato-base pizza topped with parma ham).

What was a nice gesture was that some of their dishes (including the Sole Mio Linguine and Parmese) incorporated a donation to certain Hong Kong charities. I believe this was a HK$8 donation. So in a sense you were doing good while enjoying a nice Italian dinner - very thoughtful.

The food took a little while to arrive even though the other tables had already been served. It didn't bother us much but we can imagine that the wait might be even longer if the restaurant was crowded. Service-wise, the staff were generally friendly but not intrusive. We later learned during bill payment that they were locals, with Nepalese descent.

All in all, this was a great choice for a casual Italian dinner. The dinner for 2 cost approximately US$50-55 without drinks. It wasn't cheap but for the quality of food, we would certainly recommend Sole Mio if you're craving Italian.

Every time we come back to Sole Mio on our trips to HK, it feels like coming home. The place is cozy unpretentious and the staff are attentive and immediately make you feel at home. The food is prepared well. I had the pizza which was thin, crispy and would get a passing grade in Napoli. My wife had the penne arrabiata which was just spicy enough and the pasta was al dente. We will come back again and again.

This is not the best meal I've had in my life, however, not everyone can afford to dine at The Mandarin Oriental, so if you are on a tight budget, this is the best meal you can get for your money in Hong Kong.

I've been there twice, once on a weekday having their lunch menu and at the weekend eating the brunch buffet. I found the weekday lunch menu was really excellent great quality ingredients skilfully cooked.

Not so sure about the weekend buffet, though, it seems as if some of the buffet items were not super fresh, brown salad leaves, stale breadsticks... disappointing pizzas but at the end of the day, you get what you pay for, so, I don't complain.

Staff attitude and service varied very much depending on the person, the owner / manager seemed very friendly and overly eager to help. The waitresses, one of them was ok, kind of neutral and the other one was miserable, you could tell she didn't want to be there... and it's not that she was that busy because they only had 2 tables each...

If you go, I recommend you give the pizzas a miss, and stick to the chicken or the fish (I haven't tried the pasta). Also, if you go with kids, they have a 'kids eat free' menu however, the portions are tiny. Sufficient for a toddler but not for a child over the age of 4, so if you go with older kids, you may want to order them something extra for them.

Whenever I hv a cravings for pasta, this will be the first place I can think of and they never disappoint me. Al dente pasta always cook to perfection. Their thin crust pizza is also a must have item. Best of all, food and wine prices are reasonable. Definitely a hidden gem in the city.
