We had initially planned to stay three nights here as it was cheap and located next to an MRT. We later decided we would treat ourselves to a night at the Marina Bay Sands and so I emailed to cancel the third night, no response received to email, and when I turned up she was going to still charge us as we hadn't given notice, but I pointed out I emailed and so she waived that. We weren't greeted with a "hello" or "Welcome to Singapore" but a dingy door and stairwell (no reception area or desk) and then a sign saying to call a number to check-in - excellent if you haven't got a local SIM card...

After using the doorbell, one of the other guests eventually let us in and we used expensive roaming charges to call the owner (from upstairs) who proceeded to complain that we had not turned up on time - surely she'd expect flexibility given airlines run to a schedule of their own!

A 10 percent service charge was levied (what service?), and a $50(!!!) deposit was required for the room key. The rooms were standard hostel fare, but the living areas were full of junk and not comfortable at all. Lights out was at 10pm (although this wasn't enforced judging by the two children running around screaming), but the walls were paper thin so ear plugs are a must! The showers were over the toilets and there were no bath mats, just towels on the floor (towels are $3ea to hire!), and the linen was lamentable (recommend sleeping bag).

The few pluses were the location and the free wi-fi worked perfectly for me. However all this was overcast by the utter rudeness of the owner, so much so that we forfeited our second night there and paid hundreds of dollars more for an extra night at the Marina Bay Sands.

I've stayed in some pretty awful hostels, but this takes the cake. Would not recommend this place to my worst enemy!

Some reviews here talk about the rudeness of the staff. I do not think she is rude as much as her English is limited and she can come across very blunt. In fact we stayed here nine nights and found her very pleasent.
The breakfast is basic but good and although it is a bit out of the city it has a great transport link in that the MRT is right on the doorstep. Being a bit out of the city is a bit more relaxing that always being in the hussle and bustle and the food in the markets here is cheaper too. A kitchen that we could use would have been better. I would defo come back here

I stayed in this hostel for three night. This hostel have wifi and AC, but wifi was almost broken and we can not use AC all day. Because owner suddenly turn off AC and light!! AND we can not check in until 2pm. If you arrive before 2 pm you have to wait.
This hostel's nice point is ONLY CHEAP but if you stay only 2 night, you must pay extra charge. it is important. IF!! you can pay more 1$ or 2$, I recommend another hostel.

98SG is a good option to spend a night in Singapore when you're on budget. The hostel is clean, neat, and very well located near MRT station. Few minutes to city center, few minutes to the airport. Very good price for the dorm standard, BUT... whan paying, owner adds 10% to final price whithout explaining why. I know it's still cheap, but it's simply unfair. BTW. it's muslim hostel, so no beer allowed.

I research many other hostels in Singapore before I traveled and one of the things that attracted me to 98SG was it's location. Yes many of the reviews are correct about the owner and caretaker, but you have to remember that we are visitors in their homeland, their customs and hospitality are completely different than ours. We have to learn to adapt and conquer. Personally we barely spend time at the hostel during the day. We would get up, have toast and coffee to start the day (snacks courtesy of the hostel) and than take the train (about 500 yds. away from the front door) to our daily adventure.
We spent 4 nights and 5 days in Singapore and we've truly enjoyed it.
I have already recommended this hostels to other, you cannot beat the convenient location and cheap rates for it's excellent sleeping accommodations.

Don't judge this place from the outside or the building's common stairwell which stinks. Once up on level 2 and inside, it is clean and safe. Obviously, given its upstairs location within a multi-tenant building, it has no outdoor areas. However, hostel makes the most of a very small space. Everything is cramped - but that's singapore. Free breakfast and internet, including wireless. Good cheap restaurants downstairs. Best thing is the location - only 30 seconds to the MRT station on the line that goes to both downtown and changi airport. The woman who runs the place is a real character. She can be very stern when you first check in, but she has a soft side underneath her tough exterior! And she was kind enough to let people leave their luggage there after checking out and pick it up on the way back through to Changi Airport, which I and several other backpackers really appreciated. A cheap spot to stay in singapore if you just need a 'bed and breakfast' type hostel and will spend most of your time out and about in singapore.
