We initially tried getting a room at Hostel Margouya 2 (with no prior reservation), but they were full. The owner booked us a private room at Casa Margouya, which we highly appreciated since we had almost run out of options. Casa Margouya is a small hostel located in the center of Puerto Varas. The rooms and the premises are clean, the kitchen is fully equipped. Out of the two bathrooms, one was free every time we needed it. The staff is very helpful and friendly. They helped us with renting a car, booking a hostel in Cochamo and they gave us useful information about our next travels. The atmosphere is nice, with travelers hanging out in the main lobby. From our room, we could hear their chatting, but after 11pm it got quiet, so we didn't have any issue with that. All in all, it's a nice place to be.

Casa Margouya is tiny! There are only two bathrooms, which is an issue in the morning when everyone is taking a shower. I stayed in a top bunk and could not sit up on my bed (and I am not that tall). Staff weren't that friendly either. On the plus side the location is good, and they can book all the activities for you.

We called Casa Margouya in the morning to make a reservation for the same day. They said they had availability and confirmed the reservation. When we arrived, they said there was no reservation for our name. We waited for some time until the receptionist came back. He explained that he had made the reservation for us but then two people suddenly decided to stay longer so he just cancelled our reservation and gave it to them. Since the hostel was booked out, without asking he booked another hostel for us of which he said it was the same: Only it is more expensive and not at all what we wanted...

Just stayed only one night at Casa Margouya this week and I can only recommend this hostel. The owner, Nicolas (Frenchman) is a top class bloke. He will be more than happy to give you advice and to make your stay enjoyable. He has been living in chile for 14 years so he knows what he s talking about. The hostel is very comfy but more importantly, it is super clean! It feels like home away from home! Nico can also book tours for you such as canyoning, etc...
The hostel location is just perfect. Next to everything.
Stay at Casa Margouya!

I stayed here for a few nights during a solo backpacking trip through southern Chile. I found both the staff and the guests to be very friendly and easy going. It's a pretty small hostel with one common area in the middle. Most people congregated in the common area instead of hiding in their rooms, so it made it easy to talk to and meet other backpackers.

The location is perfect. It's right next to the lake and just steps from restaurants, shops and cafes. Pretty cutesy town, but a bit on the pricier side.

Breakfast is decent, but varies based on who was working the night before (i.e. who bought the stuff). One morning I was surprised to find ham and cheese slices and fresh fruit, in addition to the usual bread and jam. Another morning we had yogurt cups and dry cereal. Plus tea and coffee, of course.

I highly recommend doing a hike at Todos Los Santos Lake. It's recommended to catch an early bus since the drive is about ~60 minutes, but I promise it's worth it. Hike the Isolation Trail for stunning views of Volcano Osorno. The staff can give you more details on bus times, etc.

Room Tip: Ask for the room behind the reception desk - it has a huge window with a lake view!
