The fish market in Santiago is an experience. It is very crowded, crazy, colorful, and noisy. Everywhere you look there are stalls with many different kinds of fish. I have no idea what some of the fish were. Also in the building are some stalls that sell handicrafts and assorted junk. The place is very crowded which is also some of the appeal. The market reminded me of Pike Street Market in Seattle although this market wasn't quite as nice. It can be hard to walk around since there are so many people in the aisles. We went on a weekend when it was probably more crowded than usual. Also in the building are several restaurants. This is not a place that you would make a major effort to see, but if you are in the area it is worth visiting.

Clean - lots of great looking seafood! Very clean and the choices are amazing. You just want to buy everything.

Whilst I can understand my fellow travellers and reviewers have made comments about Mercado Central being a tourist trap it should be noted that there are many locals who buy their produce here and also dine here. Yes there are plenty of restaurants and yes a lot cater to tourists but there are plenty of smaller restaurants with many locals enjoying some great food. The larger restaurants will have menus in English whilst the smaller will not so if you do not have a good understanding of Spanish you will struggle to order what you want or to understand the menu. I got by and ended up with an interesting blend of seafood that is not for the fainthearted.
Overall this market is a must see and i appreciated the country/city/location I was in.

Very busy especially weekends but the atmosphere popular with tourists and local; alike.
Building of French design , Stalls selling fish and shellfish aplenty .Two main restos domiate the
central hall cheap ones at the sides tucked away. Roam photograph and try the food.

We explored the market and marveled at the amazing array of fish and seafood. We decided to have lunch there but how to decide on one the many places available? This man says his is the best, that man says his is better...we enjoyed the interactions and finally decided upon one which suited us very well
