We have stayed at Hostal Amazonas Inn on numerous occasions over the last 8 years. Our latest stay was in their " best room " # 103 for one week. While it is spacious, with ample daylight, two balconies, clean, and the service is good, unfortunately there has been significant deterioration in several areas:

Quality - While several have commented on refurbishing, and upgrading we failed to notice any changes ! In our room the patio door handle no longer functions and the door is kept closed by propping a chair against it. "Hot water" was only tepid at best. The shower stall material was discoloured ( mold ? ) and curling away from the wall. The toilet was continuously gurgling. Only 50 % of electrical light switches and bulbs were working.

Sleep quality was directly impacted by very hard mattresses, noise and vibration from street traffic, erratic behavior of the drug crazed folks in the street below, and the early a:m breakfast setup in the hallway right outside the room.

Value - Room # 103 is now $ 40 / night which is no longer good value. Comparable accommodation rates average $ 15 person $ 25 couple for clean rooms with standard amenities. While they advertise "desayuno is included" - each day consisted of white bread ( no toaster available ) a dollop of jam, small " tang like " juice, and coffee. In an area where there is an abundance of tropical fruits ..... a varied breakfast used to be served in the restaurant below.

Location - while still very central and convenient, the area is now home to a very active drug scene. Our vehicle was parked on the public street immediately in front of a 24 hour security guard booth in front of the Inn, and in broad daylight sustained hundreds of dollars damage when vandalized with wooden clubs and stones. Drug users behavior is irrational and unpredictable. We confirmed with several local residents that such violent incidents have become common. The staff indicate the area is not safe at night. We would highly recommend that you utilize the services of a parkade rather than parking on the street in this area at anytime !!

Finally their website is no longer active, and it was extremely difficult to obtain a reservation by email.

Unfortunately, we are sorry but we will not stay here again and can no longer recommend this Hostal.

We stayed at the Amazonas prior to and after our trip to Galapagos. The hotel was adequate for our purposes. The rooms were clean and well appointed and the beds comfortable.
Unfortunately our rooms were very noisy on both occasions. Firstly from the road and on the second visit from a party in a nearby room. The walls must be paper thin as we heard every word.

There is a very busy restaurant attached to the hotel that provides ok fast food and there are plenty of restaurants and shops nearby.

We were able to store luggage at the Amazonas while we were away for three nights and our bags were ready for us on our return.
This hotel is only average but served our purpose. The staff were very accommodating and friendly.

Room Tip: Away from the street.

I'm not going to say that this place was absolutely fantastic, but my room was always clean and the staff was always extremely helpful. For the price, I'd say it's absolutely worth it.

In comparison, I stayed at another hostal the night before that had no sheets on the bed nor light in the room and the price was only slightly more to stay here.

Apparently the street can be a bit dangerous but I was out most nights and had no problems.

It's close to "Gringolandia" as well, so if you're looking for that, it's a stone throw away.

Overall, a very pleasant experience

Room Tip: Pay in cash and don't ask for a receipt, I won't mention the reason though because I think y...

We stayed here two nights while in Quito as well as another comparably-priced place in Mariscal (Posada del Maple). Neither were outstanding but since they were both so similar, I think that what we experienced is basically what you get for $30/night.

We stayed here on a friend's recommendation. She lives in Quito and walked there and personally made a reservation for us months before our arrival. She wanted to ensure we got the nice corner room with the window and balcony. When we arrived to check-in, however, they said they had no reservation for us and the room we reserved was not available. But they had rooms open and offered us Room 206. It was fine. A bland, windowless room.

My friend later went back to talk to them about the reservation mix-up and they claimed that the couple who were in the room she reserved for us had actually had a reservation for it before she made the one for us. That is a different story from saying they didn't even have the reservation, which was what they had told us.

The room was small and painted green. The bathroom "door" does not latch into anything, it is essentially a piece of board that covers the doorway and the outer knob kept falling off. The shower hose is attached to the sink and the shower curtain doesn't keep the water into the shower area so expect a pretty wet floor when you emerge. There was plenty of hot water and good water pressure, though. Our sink also had a leak so each time we used it the floor got soaked. There is a TV mounted high in a corner of the room. I am 5'10" and each time I stood near it my husband winced, thinking I was going to hit my head on it--I was just short enough not to, but anyone taller than I am will likely have to keep an eye out to avoid knocking your head on the TV.

The rate included breakfast, which was fine--toast, juice, tea or coffee and whatever they had made; one morning it was eggs, one morning it was fruit. Although it looks like a buffet setup, you actually sit and are served. Breakfast is served on tables set up on the first floor lobby. Noise of preparation started very early and we could hear it in our room on the second floor (luckily we are early risers) so it must have been insanely loud for those in first floor rooms.

People at the desk were alternately friendly and pleasant or surly depending who was there. They recommend leaving your valuables in their safe boxes but the boxes are too tiny for anything but some cash and passports--you cannot lock up any electronics as they won't fit.

The location is excellent, though as you are in easy walking distance of all the Gringolandia restaurants and night spots. And there is a good laundry service right across the street (actually, there are laundries all down that street).

This is a "just a place to sleep" type stay and I wouldn't stay here again but it was clean and safe.

Room Tip: Do not stay on the first floor if you want to sleep in--breakfast prep is loud and people sit right...

We stayed in the Amazonas Inn four nights. The service is good and the staff is friendly. It was an OK option between day trips in Quito and reading reviews it seems it has been refurbished. We paid 35$ for a double room that was spacious and full of light with two balconies, wooden floors throughout, cable tv, wifi(that works!) and hot shower.

However the rooms in the first floor are quite noisy once the breakfast service begins (7 am) and the matresses in the first floor are extremely hard, we wanted to change rooms but the ones on the second floor have tiny little windows. Also the sliding doors of the bathrooms do not close and the shower was outdated but the water was hot.

The breakfast was included, enough but not plenty. It included toasts, butter and jam plus eggs one day and salad fruit the next one.

The area is very convinient, full of restaurants/bars(Plaza Foch) and travel agencies. Although during the night it changes (hikers) but there is police all around. It seems it is changing in the last couple of years.

Overall this hotel was OK. It was a cheap option but two nights I couldn't sleep properly.

Room Tip: First floor: spacious rooms, beautiful balconies, noisy after 7am, hard matresses Second floor: tin...

I can't say enough about how great this hostal was. Our first encounter was with the new owner's son who was so friendly and cordial and showed us rooms for a future stay. When we arrived they went out of their way to get us comfortably settled. The rooms have been updated with new drapes, comforter covers, and upholstery and the showers are HOT. The rooms and hall are spotlessly clean and a nice breakfast is served every morning. It was the best value of any hotel I stayed in this trip. It is only two short blocks from some excellent restaurants and night life.

Dear Gorge t,

I am sorry to read this bad review. We are the new owners of the Hostal.
The former administration was neglectful in the aspect of the cleanliness and the quality of service. We have changed everything inside the place. We have hot water, WiFi, Cable in every room.
In behalf of all the staff, I apology for the bad impression you got from our hostal.
