“Truly in the heart of it all!”
Reviewed December 10, 2015 for a stay in November 2015

Corazon of El Centro has all the comforts of home. Dano has done an outstanding job of making sure everything you need is there. He takes the time you need to talk through anything unexpected that might occur by meeting you in person when you arrive and escorting you to the place. He answers all your questions, and we even received many emails throughout the week full of research he had done to answer everything in more detail. And of course a phone is provided so that he can be reached at any time if you need it.
We were personally introduced to the Cuencanos who work in front of the entrance to the apartment and it felt very special to say good morning to them by name each day. We watched the hustle and bustle of the operations in San Francisco Plaza from our balcony and fell in love with the city. This city has just the right amount of tourism to make you comfortable, but if the tourists all went away life would still move joyously forward.
The first day we arrived there was a large pile of timber on the ground in front of the building. The following day I felt like we were watching an Amish barn raising (even down to the women bringing refreshments). We thought they must be making a new tienda, but when the tinsel, twinkle lights, flowers, and small figurines came in the next day, I realized that it was a nativity! Each night rows of chairs would be put out in front of the display and the rest of the week we were blessed with a beautiful scene of faith and fellowship as Christmas season was celebrated Ecuadorian style. One night on our way home we ran into Segundo (you will meet him) right as the greeting was commencing, and he came over and gave us big hugs. I honestly hated to leave after our nine day stay.
Dano has created a little bit of heaven on the roof of this building for all his apartment guests. We never ran in to anyone else up there (but would have enjoyed the company if we had), and the breeze and views of the city and the surrounding mountains are breathtaking.
We have rented several places with VRBO in other locations, and have had a great experience with them all, but Dano’s attention to detail and his personal investment in our stay were truly above and beyond.
Even though I can’t imagine a better apartment or location for your trip to Cuenca, I am sure that all of his places are special because of course- they come with Dano as your host!

Liked best: Being immersed in the culture, yet having the comforts of home at our fingertips-
Liked least: It is true that the smog from the city buses is hard to take at times.

“Perfect place to stay in Cuenca”
Reviewed August 30, 2015 for a stay in July 2015

We stayed at this apartment in July for five, after several days busy hiking and biking, so we were ready to relax. The apartment is terrific, and Dano has thought of absolutely everything you can imagine to make the stay comfortable and convenient. The rooms are spacious, spotless and very well equipped - even a washer and dryer!
The location couldn't be better, close to the center of Cuenca, but quiet at night for sleeping. We really enjoyed this place and would love to return some day.

“Really loved this place”

A friend and I spend 6 nights here in February. This is a wonderful and huge apartment. We spent most of the time in the neat sunroom. The apartment has a nice kitchen, two baths , large walk-in closet , great bed, living room and nice balcony. The host was terrific and provided great info and a cell phone in order to contact him. etc. The location is great on the San Francisco plaza with a lot of indigenous markets nearby. Got an incredible bouquet of flowers for the apartment for $7 at the flower market nearby. It is also only a block or two from the grand "new" cathedral that is really impressive. We were there during carnival and got roped into participating in all the water balloon and foam spray "wars", which was great fun. You can walk to anything that you might need from here. The washer and dryer was a great plus and was no extra charge. We had easy check in and out and we felt very safe and comfortable here. There is a small police satellite station right out front. Make sure that you stay long enough to fully enjoy this place. There are lots of free events nearby as well. Went to the free symphony one night that was great.

Was exactly as advertised. We loved being in the middle of Cuenca.. restaurants, museums, churches ,shops, all within 5 min.Bring your lap-top, there is no computer or T V, other then for videos.3rd floor, 42 steps. If you have bad knees rent no. 3 one floor lower, and equally nice.

Just wanted to clarify for those who might be reading this review to ascertain whether to book here or not. After all, Reviews can be a critical factor in making or breaking someone's business.

I make a very concerted effort to be very detailed in the description of my apartment listings so there's no surprises when my guests arrive. It's called 'full disclosure'.

In this listings detail page it says:

(quote) "FULL DISCLOSURE: This building (as is 95% in Cuenca) does not have an elevator. The apartment requires a 2-flight walk-up."

(quote) "Enjoy the flat screen TV (with HDMI ports so you can watch (even USA TV stations!) from your portable internet device), or a host of DVD's of your choosing to play on the DVD player." What this guest meant when she wrote "...there is no computer or TV..." is that there is no TV stations (ie; satellite/cable/dish) other than the 1 or 2 Spanish stations the rabbit ears pick up. There IS, however, a library of nearly 100 DVD movies/tv shows my guests can choose from to watch. I chose not to subscribe to cable TV because A) there are very few English channels and they are mostly outdated series such as 2 1/2 Men, the Simpsons, etc. B) Most of my guests have told me they didn't come to EC to watch TV and aren't interested in it. However, they have the option to watch a movie from the DVD library, watch what is on their internet device on the flat screen TV, surf the net, read a book, or whatever. C) the cost is prohibitive (at least $600 a year for each apt) and I would have to pass that cost along to the guests by up'ing the nightly cost...when most aren't interested in it in the first place. Unfortunately, this guest misunderstood the reference to 'internet' or 'WiFi' to mean that I provided my guests a computer to use. As such, they didn't bring any internet device with them for their 2-weeks stay and found themselves lacking for entertainment in the evening with not much interest in the DVD selections I provided.

Regarding the sunroom being cold. The sunroom is indoor/outdoor in that it is encompassed by 4 walls and an overhead roof, but at one end the upper part of the wall, close to the roofline, is open to the outdoors. During this guest's stay, Cuenca was experiencing unusually cooler temps. All other rooms (living, bathroom, bedroom) are completely enclosed.

I presume these (and the guest informing me 'it is too far to walk from the kitchen to the dining room') are the reasons why the apt was marked down a notch under the categories 'Service' and 'Quality of Facilities/Amenities". Note: I DO listen to my guests and have since purchased a small table and chairs and placed them right outside the kitchen.

Moral of the story...ask questions of your 'to be host' before your trip. Pack a diverse selection of clothing options. And, lastly, keep in mind how much you are paying for your accommodations and, as such, set your level of expectations to be commensurate with that price. In this case, the guest paid $55 a night for two people (even though 3 showed up). Or to put it somewhat humorously, if you buy a Toyota Corolla, don't hold it to the expectations of a Lexus. ;-)
