I got there just the same way as Agnieszka described (review before). Go not too late in the day, perhaps you can team up with hostel mates, since you will feel a bit more relaxed. Take some money for donation and tour (around 30 soles), all money goes to the monkeys!

Hi Patrick, thanks for your visit and review! We agree, aim to get to us early in the day as it can sometimes be a long journey depending on how full the boats to and from Iquitos are (as they leave when full)!

Just make sure you don't skip that place!!! We fist went to the jungle for a few days, where you can see animals from the distance. It's also nice, but on the Isla de los Monos you can just play and have a lot of fun with the monkeys. And trust me, they have a good life there and they have a lot of fun too when you play with them! They volounteers that work there are also very cool and friendly. You can also see a sloth and a beautiful macau.

HOW TO GET THERE: Don't listen to people who tell you that the only option is to go by a private expensive boat for 200 soles. Just take a mototaxi to the Puero Productorio (very dodgy place, but don't be discourged, it is what it is..), take a collectivo for 20 soles pp that goes to Indiana, but tell them you have to get off on the Isla de Los Monos. Then you get off, walk 10-20min through the path in the jungle and you are there. It will take you in total around 1h-70min. To go back, take a boat from there to Indiana (10 soles) and from Indiana do Iquitos again a collectivo boat (17 soles). It takes a bit longer to get back, around 1.5-2h, but it's relatively easy. Just make sure you go there in the morning, so you have more time to spend with the monkeys. The last boat arrives to Iquitos around 6pm.

Don't miss that place, it's really cool!

Thanks so much for your visit, and thoughtful thorough review! We are so happy you enjoyed your time with us learnibg about our project and playing with our social little monkeys.
A note to those wanting to visit us, the boat from Puerto de Productores will now take you to VARADERO (from Nov 5th) and will not drop you at the island as they only do this when the water level is low, and it is now on the rise.
Because of this please visit us in the office or call us as we need to send our peque peque local wooden boat to VARADERO to pick you up and bring you to the island (10 soles to the island), it will also take you back to Varadero (10 soles back) where you will take the fast boat back to Iquitos.

Lots of happy monkeys here. It was a bit tricky to get there since you have to take the speedboat from the local pier but worth coming here! Great island with many animals around.

Thanks for your visit and review, we are all about happy monkeys here at La Isla de los Monos!

You're right that part of the adventure is getting to us as we are 30km outside of Iquitos - but journeying along the Amazon river is an experience in itself :)

This was probably the best thing we did during our trip to the Amazon. Being able to play with, touch, hold, and experience the monkeys was one of the most incredible things I've ever experienced. The volunteers were extremely informative, and it was obvious how much they enjoy the work.

Thanks so much for your visit and review - we are so happy that you found the experience the best! We are proud to be cage free with our monkeys roaming free as they should be, and they do love to interact! We are very proud of our volunteers support, thank you for mentioning them as they are an important part of our project.

We had an extra day in Iquitos and decided to visit La Isla De Los Monos to see what it was all about. Without a doubt, one of the most memorable places we visited in Peru! Our guide was really good and telling us about how the monkeys are handed into the rescue center and allowed to roam wild, which was evident by the fact the monkeys were just walking around.

They're very friendly and playful and guaranteed to put a smile on your face!

If you're visiting La Isla De Los Monos, taking a small donation in the way of fruit (for the monkeys), will go a long way and help this amazing place continue to look after the monkeys.

Thanks so much for your review and sharing photos from your visit, it's great to hear how much you enjoyed your time with us and the monkeys! It's important to us that our guides tell all of our visitors about our project so they can understand that we are a centre that rescues, rehabilitates and releases monkeys.

We will always graciously accept donations from our visitors, and fruit or milk powder for the monkeys is always at the top of the list! For those reading this who are yet to visit us, please note we have a feeding schedule for all of our monkeys so don't allow our guests to feed freely.

Thanks again!

We visited monkey island for about an hour as part of an amazon experience trip. We were taken around the area while being educated on the plight of the various different monkeys and answers to any questions we had regarding the monkeys or other fauna and Flora. All this while many inquisitive and energetic monkeys fly around and use us as mobile trees. 100% recommend.

Thanks for your review Mike, we are so glad that you enjoyed your time with us! We try and ensure that when you come as part of a tour with limited time that we maximise it as much as possible, but for those wanting more time we do have tour packages so you can spend longer with us and the monkeys :)

This is an honorable and lovely monkey sanctuary doing their best to help rescue primates (and some other animals) in need, while also educating the local kids about why monkeys should not be kept as pets- that is a challenging job in the face of local markets where you can still find monkeys for sale. The island is a fascinating visit and the staff are warm and delightful- and the monkeys of course are all beautiful and healthy, and very fortunate to be there. When we mentioned La Isla De Los Monos to our motorcycle taxi driver he knew it immediately, as did the river taxis, and they brought us exactly where we needed to go. The ride there is also a cool adventure- I highly recommend a visit, and don't forget to bring papayas from the market to donate to the animals!

Hi Jill, thanks so much for your kind and informative review, and of course your visit to us!

You are right that the illegal wildlife trade is rife, and we are on the front line of the amazon trade trying our best to protect and preserve the wildlife surrounding us. Because of this we do all that we can to educate those who visit us, as well as local schools and communities about why it is important. This as well of course as rescuing, rehabilitating and releasing our wonderful monkeys!

Part of the adventure is getting to us, thanks again for recommending us!

Did a whole day visit at this wonderful rescue island for monkeys. Thank you Gilberto for picking us up and dropping us back to our hotel and all the information you provided about your fantastic cause. The staff and volunteers do an amazing job of caring for the animals and nursing those rescued back to full health. Recommend 100% to visit and support this wonderful place.

Thank you so much for joining us for our full day tour, we are so happy that you enjoyed your time with us and the monkeys!

It is through support like yours that helps us to continue our work rescuing, rehabilitating, and releasing monkeys. As you saw through spending the day "behind the scenes" with us, it's a centre full of dedication and love of the project.

Thanks again
