“A very nice park”

Spent the whole day here, picknicking and chilling with a blunt or two. There are some areas that are secluded and nice, and the locals also use this "botanical" garden for relaxation and fun times.

The garden is more exotic than the average garden, but as a botanical garden for nature freaks; it's not very awesome.

Still, considering it's easily accessable by bus, and that it's free, I would recomend this park.

Overgrown. Poor signage. Bathroom out of order. Weeds. Yep, there are some interesting trees. It is much more like a poorly maintained park than any kind of real botanical garden.

Unkept gardens, weeds and grass everywhere, dying herb and edible garden filled with weeds. So, so very sad! No flowers, nothing exotic... basically a poor maintained park!
BTW, museum in the premises is closed for maintenance and the green house is covered with tarp and falling apart...
The good thing: it's free, otherwise I would had been very mad about going all the way there and still had to pay to see a garden less interesting than my back yard!

The Jardin Botanico is approximately 30 minutes bus ride from the centre of Montevideo. It is primarily a collection of trees and shrubs found in Uraguay, with few flowers. We did observe several parakeets flying about.
The gardens are free to enter. They are relatively new, and will take some time to develop fully.

The Jardín Botánico in barrio Prado, Montevideo, is the first and only botanical garden in Uruguay. It is adequately curated and maintained, but lacks the formality and grandeur I expected from such a large botanical garden. It is more like a park with strategically planted collections of trees and shrubs, there is no charge for admission and it is a lovely place to lounge in the shade on a warm day.

The garden museum was closed for renovations when we visited, and the solariums are only open to the public during special tours or events. I still think it is well worth a visit if you’re staying in Montevideo for more than a couple days and, if you like plants (and speak Spanish), the garden offers free classes on the native flora of Uruguay. Check their website for details.

If you plan to visit the botanical garden, also include a trip to the Museo de Bellas Artes Juan Manuel Blanes. It is just a few blocks to the north and also offers free admission. Behind the Blanes Museum there is a small but pleasant japanese garden.
