It seems our experience at Stoney Creek was exceptional, but we were treated very poorly. It began when we arrived. The manager (Michelle) insisted we didn't have a reservation; we had to dig out our confirmation email (from her!) before she believed us - and even then she tried to talk us into a different room from the one we had booked. It seemed to us that they were closed for the season. (The lights were off, there were no other guests, the restaurant was closed, etc., etc.) But rather than confess that and apologize for the mistake (and perhaps offer us a discount or free drink), she blamed the error on her father's death. I certainly have some sympathy for that, but to use it to guilt out your guests and excuse your errors is unprofessional at best.

Note that they accept only cash and insist on payment on check-in. (They were the only place to do this out of about 20 places we stayed in New Caledonia, Vanuatu, and Fiji.)

The private bure itself was fine - basically a Western cabin rather than a bure, but plenty big for two (with a separate living room). It included a jacuzzi that didn't work; they said they'd fix it, but didn't - no apology or discount for that either.

When we checked out, we had one incidental to pay for - $4.50 for a beer. I had a $10 bill, but they had no change. That's pretty bizarre in itself for a cash-only establishment. But, again, instead of simply comping the beer, they insisted I drive a staff member to a shop down the road so that he could get some change! Unbelievable.

We, clearly, will never go back, which is a shame, since the facilities and location are quite nice.

This was the second time I've stayed at Stoney Creek. I find it such a comfortable setting, the staff are friendly and very accommodating. It's a great spot from which to visit the local mud bath and hot springs and the garden of the sleeping giant. The food is tasty and reasonably priced and our room was sweet and spotless. I also loved the happy family of dogs and cats.

This was our second time at Stoney Creek. It is the perfect location when coming into or out of Nadi. Just 15 minutes from the airport - up in the hills away from the tourists, noise and traffic of Nadi. Beautiful views over the sleeping giant and surrounding mountains. This is a great place for kids. Two room bures have plenty of space for a family of 5. The kids love the pool, the dogs, the cats and the frogs. Michelle and Gary are delightful hosts and treat our family like part of theirs. Anytime you need to stay in Nadi look at this as an option - sure beats the sterile hotels of the tourist areas.

Room Tip: Ask for the two room bure if staying with kids.

This was our first trip to Fiji and we stayed at Stoney Creek our last two nights, after having stayed a few nights on the Yasawa Islands.

The resort is peaceful and relaxing, so probably not for the party crowd (unless you bring your own party). We had a great time there as the employees and the owners could not have been more friendly and accommodating. The food was great and really reasonably priced, the room was nice and clean, and the resident animals were cute and friendly but not overbearing. The owner Gary (his wife Michelle was away) was talkative and friendly, told us about the country, gave us a ride into town one day, and even took us along to a barbecue he was going to with friends! It was an awesome introduction to Fiji and the friendly relaxed lifestyle.

Regarding location, Stoney Creek is in a really interesting setting "in the bush" on a hill off of a dirt road. It is not walking distance to Nadi town, but there are a number of buses that pass down the dirt road, some that continue into town and others you have to transfer from. It was actually very easy and not intimidating the way we thought it might be and we managed to take the bus to and from Stoney Creek into Nadi town. On our way home it was flooded with school children which was actually a nice and funny way to see a little bit into the daily life of the Fijians. On our last morning we took a taxi from Stoney Creek directly to the airport which had been prearranged for us the night before by reception. It was on time and charged exactly what we were quoted; no complaints and no haggling.

All in all the place was a great deal, lots of fun, and has wonderful owners and employees. I highly recommend staying there.

Room Tip: Go for a room with its own bathroom as I don't think the dorms would be as enjoyable. Worth the price difference.
