One of the oldest parts of this enormous city, this is the street or actually small historic quarter that connects the upper, central part of the city with the oldest preserved part of capital, Podil. We started from Kontraktova Ploshcha, the main Podil square with adorable Christmas and New Year market. This is steep, rocky street with old houses full of street art, breweries, restaurants and artist selling almost everything. Special vibe of the city marked with the baroque St. Andrew's church on top, although closed for years for reconstruction with stunning view over Podil district and the city skyline.
(Parts of interior can be seen in St. Sophia cathedral)

Podil is a nice place to visit surrounding the river with it's local market. I recommend visiting this place.

When we were visiting, the church was closed due to construction but you could go up the stairs. There is a great view of the city that is, in my opinion, worth it. The church also looks amazing after dark.

I wanted to walk the descent last time in Kiev but stayed around Maiden Square. This time made the effort to walk it and am so glad we did. Although it was winter and many stalls were closed it was still occupied by a variety of stalls selling a range of goods from cheap tat to textiles and old soviet stuff and wood carvings. The walk also takes you past a number of interesting places and a diversity of history/renovation including modern buildings, renovated buildings, graffiti covered buildings and 'how is that still standing?'buildings. Plenty of places to rest or eat on route and a funicular railway to take you back up.
