A great way to see the natural world against one of mankind's greatest engineering feats. The inlets around the canal and Charges river provide greta opportunities for spotting monkeys, birds and crocodiles, whilst huge container ships pass on the canal. Also very interesting to see the indigenous Indian village and their simple life style.

This wide, unpaved, generally level road cuts through a jungle filled with birds. But I highly recommend hiring a guide, because the birds can be difficult to spot and even harder to identify, especially if you are new to birding in the tropics. Due to the challenges of spotting birds in the thick foliage, this is a great place for serious birders, but more casual birders will see plenty of tropical birds much more easily by birding in town, the ammo dump or the Gamboa Rainforest Resort. Our guide, Gonzalo Horno, did an excellent job finding and identifying birds and knows an impressive number of calls. Gonzalohorno@hotmail.com

The Smithsonian institutes tropical research centre and a national park. Good parking, easy access from the city.
This is a great place to walk and enjoy the nature of Panama, good trails, open spaces and a large variety of tropical plants and trees. There is a small zoo with local critters (the cats are my favourite). This is a great place for couples or families.

We signed up with our friend and guide, Luis Calvo, of Panama Travel & Tours to do the day trip to zHatun Lake near the middle of the Panama Canal. Our naturalist was Alex Guevara from the same company. Alex was fantastic. and extremely knowledgeable. We start out in a boat, getting up close looks at the huge ships along side us transiting the Panama Canal. Then we turn into Seidel channels, teeming with wild life. We nosed into several islands to see up close White faced Capuchin monkeys, Geoffrey monkeys, raccoons and many shore birds. We also saw and heard groups of Howler monkeys in the trees above us. The bird life was amazing. Then we went into Soberania National Park to hike far into the park trail. Again many Howler monkeys were howling above us. We saw some spectacular birds like both black throated and slaty tailed Trogons. Truly this trip with Alex is a real "Must do" trip when in Panama.
