As one review put it, "You get what your pay for" (Usually). I paid for wash cloaths, at least a trash can in the room, remote control for TV, decent pillows, shelves in bathroom to put shaving kit on, a decent chair to sit in (not a stool w/o a back), and a least a fair amount of english speaking employees. I did not get these. For 60.50 a night, I got a small room, small bathroom (not enough shelves or towel racks), twin bed, double bed, 2 night stands, desk / mirror, stool (only item to sit on besides beds), and a wardrobe. I traveled with myself, wife and teen daughter. needless to say, we were a bit crowded. This hotel charges .10 min for local calls (was too afraid to try long distance). They have a covered area ouside near the bar with a TV, tables and chairs (but they will not not you smoke under the roof). Positives are; location, internet access (using it now, while memory is fresh)bar and resturant on site, vehicle parking, friendly employees who do not speak much english, on site security (24 hours),
For $30-60 more a night, I guess I could have had all positives, but I figure that at the rate I paid, I should have what I considered "the basics" for a city that is bragging about it´s tourism industry. Overall this was only a "fair" experiance.

Arrived shortly after midnight and the 2 people working didn't speak any English, found out later only 1 employee speaks fair English. Was brought up to the room, nothing special, went to wash up no hot water in sink or shower and the toilet didn't work either. Got a second room which lasted 2 days until I came in one night to no a/c, the compressor froze up solid. Moved me to a 3rd room which was in the back, no street noise but was woken up at 6am every morning even on Saturday to the construction site next door. The food was ok, but I'd recomend eating somewhere else especially for breakfast, no free refills on tea/coffee. The bars ok to hang out and have a drink, beers now $1.50 for local and they're only open 'till 11pm.There are no free local calls from your room, I found that out the hard way, and also my room was never cleaned daily, I had to go and try and tell the girl at the desk to have someone clean my room. When checking out they tried charging me an extra $49.00, I paid in full upon arrival. after getting the girl to show me the print out, they were trying to charge me an extra $5.00 per night, save your receipts ! I would recomend paying a little extra and stay somewhere else. If you do stay there bring ear plugs or you will be awake will all the street noise.

Had no room for a week ahead in Panama City and was unable to rebook our other nearby hotel. Walked in and were treated courtesely, despite not speaking Spanish. Booked 3 rooms, 2 doubles and a single. Single ended up being on Via Espana, but noise wasn't bad at night. All rooms were in good shape and clean, the double beds were fine, but nothing to remember. One bathroom had a loose shower door, but otherwise enjoyed the place and their amenities. Free internet, decent bar, good cafe for breakfast, small rooftop pool with large lounge area, part of which is covered. The area is staring to drop off (ripe for redevlopement), but this hotel is between La Cresta and Espana on Via Espana and is 6 blocks or so from the Wyndham Casino, but for one fifth the price was nice.

I stayed here for two nights, then went to the San Blas Islands and came back for three more nights. I found it to be an excellent hotel for the budget traveler. I had a single room the first two nights and found it small but adequate with the only problem of being on the street with terrible traffic noise. When I returned from San Blas I took a double since a single was not available and found it larger and more comfortable. Hot showers, super big soft towels, very clean rooms, and friendly staff. I didn't try the restaurant or bar. There was a rooftop pool and free internet. Just three long blocks from the Via Espana area where I like to eat. I will go back here again on my next trip.

OK, for the backpackers out there... there really aren't any good hostels in Panama City. Go the budget hotel route. Hotel Montreal is not too bad. Cabel TV (with US channels), air conditioned rooms (a savior) and decent bathroom. It's fairly cheap, so for what you pay for it isnt so bad.

The Hotel Montreal in Panama was believe it or not a surprise as long as you keep in mind you get what you pay for, but in the case of Hotel Montreal you get a little more. It has always amazed me how the cheap places in Panama City offer more for free than the much more expensive hotels. For example, the driver for Hotel Montreal was waiting for me at the airport and drove me directly to the hotel on Via Espana, for FREE. I gave him a small tip for helping me with my bags but that's it. The hotel is located just down the street from Iglesia del Carmen on Via Espana, which is not all the way to Caledonia (where most of the other discount hotels are located) and at the bottom of the hill to La Cresta (a very affluent area of Panama). I checked in very easily and paid for only one night with my credit card. A double room was $27.50 but they also have singles for $22.00. If you can ask for a room higher up (the hotel has 8 floors and 86 rooms) then the less noisy it may be because Via Espana is BUSY. My room was nothing special but it was clean and had a TV, A/C and hot water in the shower (had to wait 10 minutes but it eventually came). My room (201) did not have a window and someone before had obviously smoked a ton so as long as you kept the A/C on, it didn't smell too bad. This probably wouldn't be acceptable to many, but I enjoy the budget life and can look past lots of things. The rooms range in size from a single all the way to a family room for $40.00. There is a clean pool on the 8th floor with a pretty nice view of the city and the bay. On the ground floor is a restaurant with breakfast for $3.00, a bar with local beers costing $1.00 and an internet room with two computers for free. Now, if you bring your laptop they have free wireless anywhere on the ground floor so you can sit in the bar, drink a Balboa and review the hotel where your staying - that's what I'm doing right now. There's some interesting locals that hang out at the bar and always ready for a conversation. I will warn you, because of the price the hotel is often used by those engaging in extra curricular activities either with a girlfriend or someone they may be employing. I didn't see it much but once was enough to know what was going on. Panama is a city that truly never sleeps, so if you don't plan on spending a lot of time in your room and only plan on using it to sleep, then this is a great find. It is very popular with Europeans and Latin Americans alike and the only other US folks I ran into were two old guys at the bar waiting for a VFW meeting to start.
