Our first exposure to Paul's Homewood Cafe was a takeout order of Spanakopita that was so good, we decided we just had to go back for a full-blown dinner. And we're glad we did.
It's easy to miss Paul's as you drive by on this busy and cluttered commercial section of West Street in Annapolis, several blocks beyond the street's quaint historic section, even if you know where it is. It creeps up on you in the heavy traffic; from the outside the restaurant looks like a clean unassuming home, with no neon sign and flashing arrow screaming, "In here!" And that's one of the reasons the place is so delightful -- the interior design and atmosphere are slightly upscale modern, yet somehow warm and inviting, not sterile. It feels like a modern multi-level home with lots of tables and servers running around.
And in the end, it's about the food. Oh, it's not gourmet. But then it doesn't try to be. Just good largely Greek-styled food like you would expect in someone's home. Hence my solid 4-stars. We have not been there for breakfast or lunch. But the dinner menu is wide-ranging and in our experience the choices have been uniformly good.
Besides Paul's out-of-this world Spankopita, the Moussaka and Pastitsio are excellent. and I found the Avgolemono soup with lemon-tinged chicken and orzo to be very tasty. The Meze dinner option provides an a la carte choice among Greek staples, or choose a Greek salad with four additional Meze options -- a wonderful selection.
For meat lovers, besides the usual kabobs, the Lamb Shank is delicious. For those who don't want Greek cooking there are plenty of standard seafood, chicken and steak options to choose from. The Baklava for dessert is just sweet enough without being too gooey, and there are several pies to choose among.
Overall, prices are on the higher end of reasonable for full dinners, but worth it. The wine list is varied and very good, but again, a little on the expensive side with very few by-the-glass options.
On weekend nights it can get noisy, as is common with so many popular restaurants these days. But we love the place for evening get-togethers, and are happy to suggest it to friends.
