“A Great Surprise!”

Elm Square Oyster Co.
Ranked #18 of 72 Restaurants in Andover
Price range: US$5 - US$58
Description: Elm Square Oyster Co. is a fun, fresh, and exciting restaurant serving brilliantly creative seafood and American dishes. The focus is on local and seasonal ingredients which our chef Michael Sherman artfully and tastefully blends to create ESOC's interpretation of “New” New England cuisine. We are a scratch kitchen, making all of our sauces, seasonings, and condiments from scratch. Everything from the ketchup to the ground beef, soups to sea salt. We even make our own raisins and pickles! We work closely with local fishermen, farmers, distillers and brewers to provide a unique dining experience for our guests. It is this attention to quality and detail that earned us the Best of the Northshore General Excellence Award. Behind the bar, we embrace everything that is great about American craft beverages. Our bar features a wide variety of American and imported wines, small batch spirits & local craft beers from some of the best craftsmen in America.

On a whim, we dropped into the Elm Square Oyster Co. for a late dinner and drinks. While I'm not an raw oyster eater, we were pleasantly surprised to find a small gourmet menu to complement the wine bar and local beers on tap.

The scallops and prosciutto were both fresh and flavorful with a mix of grilled parsnips and onions. The Parisian gnocchi was light and delicious with broccoli and cauliflower compliments.

We'll be back again to sample the vast appetizer list.

Thanks for a fun find.

The first review on this list pretty much sums up my experience. While the oysters were good, I agree with watered down .I was looking forward to my entree but itvwas, appetizer size and too pricey. I left hungry.

The menu was too precious... I don't care how wonderful potato chips & dip are, they're not worth $8. Very expensive, but you're paying for decorations. $30 for 4 scallops. $16 for a charred hamburger. An okay pork loin for $26. Raw oysters were okay, though a bit watered down (how do you do that?!). Service was slow and not attentive. Our server had a hard time keeping track of our order for a party of 3. We sat with empty water glasses and dirty plates. We had to flag down other servers for condiments. When we asked to be moved from the noisy bar area to a quieter part of the restaurant, they had to "check the computer." The answer should be, "Yes of course." We won't be returning.

I define "good food" as high quality (over quantity) and interesting - for example using less expected ingredient combinations in a nuanced way. We have eaten here maybe four times in the last two years and always enjoyed it. It's much better value than other so called "fine dining" spots around that put out the same mass markets menus. Here you get something a little bit higher end ... For a reasonable price. Service is always friendly if a bit spotty ... But that's ok.

We were in the Andover area for a wedding in late August and scanning our dining choices selected Elm Square based on location and the prospect of oysters. Our expectations were low and were so far exceeded, that if we had not had the wedding the night after, we'd have gone back. A wonderful selection of fresh oysters, a fabulous fish dinner, fine service and a pleasant location makes me put it at the top of the list of places to dine in Andover. If the weather is nice sit outdoors.
