“Quiet time on Nantucket”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 October 2011

Traveling in late October is great is you like quiet, an occasional cold day and cosy inns. Jared Coffin house is a good place to commune with the spirit of the founders as you hear the wind beating against the house on a raw, rainy evening as you are cosy in your warm bed. The rooms are good size, and the reception is gracious. The desk staff were exemplary in their desire to meet your needs, and the place was clean and well tended. The breakfast was a bit sparse, but I like my yogurt and fruit more that sweet pastries. The island is fun to explore with the help of a car. If the weather had been warmer biking would have been fun. Even off season with lots of seasonal closing it was an experience that I will savor. I am not a person who enjoys crowds, so I loved the quiet air of a town returned to the locals.

Room Tip: Walls were thin in the good old days, so quiet conversations are required.

this hotel is being upgraded, without losing the charm of its wonderful history, and our rooms (two couples) were excellent, a little more expensive because they were larger. The location in the center of Nantucket town simply can't be beat, since everything but a surk beach is within walking distance.

We stayed for one night at the Coffin House in October. As other guests have mentioned it is right in the town, and only a 5 minute walk from the ferry, or alternatively a short taxi ride/45 min walk to the airport, so it is really convenient.

We had a spacious room with a very comfortable bed and tastefully decorated. Overall it is not a bargain, but remember that you are in Nantucket, and it is a lot cheaper outside of the peak season.

The staff are friendly and helpful but not overbearing, striking exactly the right balance. As mentioned parking is free right behind the property which is helpful if you want to hire a car. The free breakfast and cookies/lemonade in the afternoon are a nice touch and the free internet + printer useful.

We are a family of 3 with a 5 year old child who stayed 2 nights on the 2nd floor in rm 222. Hotel was very easy to walk to from ferry. bell staff & front desk staff were friendly & helpful. Valerie at the front desk was especially delightful. She helped us with restaurant recommendations, followed up with us on our adventures and was super sweet to our child, who asked if he could call her the other day because he liked her so much. :). The outside of the hotel is attractive and although there are stairs leading up to the hotel, bell staff will carry in your bags. Cookies/lemonade at check-in. Downstairs of hotel is nice and restaurant looks awesome, although we didn't eat there. Our bedroom was really large, but a bit worn. We chose this hotel because our room had a very small room with twin bed attached to it so we didnt have to go to sleep at the same time as our child. Yeah! really good set-up if you're traveling with 1 child. However, room was SO noisy Monday morning as street sweeper went up & down for a long time and big rigs departing the ferry travelled through town. If you stay in this room, definitely turn on the a/c to drown out morning noise. Also know there is a very narrow spiral staircase you will have to climb to get to the room. Not a big deal as long as you have decent balance. Breakfast wasn't supposed to come with it, but had coffee, tea & pastries in the morning for free since the restaurant doesn't open till 10am. Really wish it would have opened 8am so we could get eggs, fruit, etc but plenty of places in town. Overall it was enjoyable because of the staff and they could accommodate a child, but would probably stay somewhere else next time.

Room Tip: Would not choose 122 because it is on the ground floor by the door into the back of the building. C...

I stayed here in late August towards the end of the tourist season. On this trip, I chose a single room with a twin bed as I was traveling solo and wanted to keep the costs down for my 11 day stay. As I thought, the room was tiny with almost no room to move around. However, it had it's own bathroom (with a full size bathtub/ shower) and a built in cupboard with enough room to store my clothes and my suitcase. As I was only planning to sleep in the room, the small size wasn't an issue. This was also one of the rooms without air conditioning (which I knew in advance).
The hotel itself is solid and fairly quiet...unfortunately, without air conditioning, some of the ambient noise outside found it's way into the room but after a couple of days, It didn't register too much. the room itself was absolutely clean with a very comfortable twin sized bed and an abundance of pillows...most importantly, everything also smelled fresh and clean.
The amenities were good with a relaxing and spacious guest lounge, a lovely restaurant and outdoor bistro. The restaurant was slightly on the expensive side but the food was superb and the bistro offered a reasonable alternative.

However, it is the staff which really sets the Jared Coffin apart from other hotels. Paula, Rachel and all of the staff were helpful, warm and friendly. After a few days, it felt as if I was surrounded by caring people who always inquired after my day and went out of their way to be kind and informative. It is safe to say that the service here was the best I have ever encountered anywhere in the world...I am already planning my trip for next year and will certainly return to the Jared Coffin.

The only downside to address would be to install air conditioning for my next visit.

Room Tip: Select a room in the main house.

We traveled to ACK during the off season for a quick weekend trip. The coffin house was a nice convenient choice. Located right in the heart of town the coffin house provided the perfect location for scouting around the town. Convenient parking allowed us to keep our rental car close by so we could jet out to the beach when we wanted to. The room was ok, a large room, with aged furnishings. I thought it was a reasonable deal considering we were paying off season rates but I think if we had paid in season rates we would have been annoyed. The TV didn't seem to work in the room and there were a few other little things like that which for the expensive of the room should all be working perfectly.
All that being said, it's Nantucket and you're bound to pay a lot of money if you stay in one of the hotels or B&Bs. I would be willing to try a different hotel next time we go.

Went their with my boyfriend in June 2010- had an amazing time. Hotel is nice, clean, staff is very polite. I don't think there were elevators, so keep that in mind if you require use of one. Location of hotel is perfect- close to town, walking distance to ferry....you'll need to take a cab if coming from airport. would definitly return

Room Tip: I don't remember there being a pool or fitness center- also we went in June, our room didn't...
