A recent family visit to Estofa Roja, tucked away behind a hostel across from Tigo, resulted in an unexpected experience of culinary brilliance. The charming, classy little nook provides a nice view of the kitchen at work. The menu items are first rate. We had a house-made duck pate (locally grown) and superb beet salad for starters along with a good wine.

For the main course we had roast duck, (my son said it was the best ever), beef medallions done perfectly, and an excellent original fish preparation. We now look forward to trying all the delectable selections.

The desserts also received high praise from all of us. Everything was done perfectly and the service was as good (and friendly!) as it gets. This little treasure has definitely added to our 'quality of life'. Thanks! Keep up the good work!

This is a wonderful experience -- a beautiful, intimate setting with gracious, attentive service, with seating in sight of the inspired choreography going on in the gleaming open kitchen. Incredible dishes with inspired flavors - one example was the unexpected but perfect interplay of the flavors of bitter chocolate merlot sauce with seared beef -- exquisite. These folks clearly lavish immense care and attention to the creation of amazing, locally-sourced dishes, and have wrapped it up in a very fine dining package. Really a delightful, delicious, memorable experience....

Tucked away in back of a hostel's courtyard, this tiny gem is wonderful for a special lunch or dinner. I happened upon it for lunch and then brought my husband back later for a dinner. Everything was so delicious, beautifully presented, and served with just the right amount of attention and expertise without being overbearing. The wines were probably fantastic but the prices seemed out of reach (even considering we knew we were out to dinner at a high-end restaurant) so we got cocktails...would love to see a few good ones at a lower price point.

This new eatery at the Adra Hostel is a serious competitor in Antigua's restaurant food scene. Friends and I went for dinner and loved the elegance of the food, the artful presentation, the quality wine and unobtrusive service. My three-course meal of beet salad, duck breast and dessert could compete with any restaurant's anywhere in the world. Wines by the glass are selected from a short but high-quality list and matched the meal in its quality. My Malbec was superb!

The dining room is quite small and looks into the spanking-clean kitchen so you can watch your meal being prepared. The atmosphere is sophisticated and tranquil, with jazz playing in the background. Service is personable yet reserved -- just the way I like it! Chefs and kitchen staff were super-friendly and seemed genuinely happy we were there.

The only drawback was that a rather loud group of 6-8 came in for dinner as we were leaving and disturbed the tranquil environment. (I hate noisy groups of tourists....but you can't get away from them here.)

In a town where there are scads of not-inexpensive mediocre restaurants, Estufa Roja provides a breath of fresh air.
