Pretty awesome to be able to hike an active volcano. Hike wasn't too bad and we got a horse to put our 3 year old on for maybe Q50. Great vistas and geology.

Tour from Antigua cost Q60 + Q50 entrance fee.

Pacaya is active, so you don't go to the top. There's no lava, but small fire was present and fumes. View is very good. Even if you go up Acatenango, you can go here too - it's good in a different way.

It's very accessible to any age group as long as you're normally fit - you have to climb up 1.5 hours, but pace is easy and its not very steep. I'd encourage older people to go too. There's always the horse-taxis as back up, if you get tired. This doesn't mean it's not good for younger folk.

Also good altitude training for the Acatenango climb.

The worst part is the little over 1 hour drive there and back.

It's further away from Antigua but they drive was not too long. We chose this hike because it's shorter than Acatenango and much easier. Most of the trail offered views of town and Volcano Fuego and Acatenango. We were told that the part near fresh lava flow is closed to public so we didn't see red hot lava on our hike. It's still a beautiful hike and we enjoyed it.

My daughter and I hiked this volcano and as difficult as it was, it was worth every minute as it was an amazing experience. I'm 63 years old and fit but probably oldest in our small group by 20-35 years. I kept thinking I;'d adjust to the altitude but never did; breathing was difficult. It was also straight up from the start. It only took about an hour and a half to get to the top or where you have to stop so not that long but challenging. Highlights-view of active volcano Fuego, toasting marshmallows on lava bed, Lava Store past midway point (who would have expected masrshmallows or store?) great guide, too.

We had a great time reaching the top, and even got to roast marshmallows on the hot rocks. The guide was great and we had a good afternoon. Would recommend.
