We enjoyed our time spent at Pacaya Volcano. The staff that work there were all very nice and knowledgeable. There is a cool little gift shop at the base of the Volcano. I think most people in average shape can make the climb. My wife rode one of the so called taxis back down (a horse), she loves to ride horses. You can roast marshmallows at the bottom in certain spots.

It is defiantly and truly one of the amazing things you can do while in Guatemala. To me it's definitely one of a life time opportunity. The hike it self to get to Pacaya is not that easy. It's very sloppy and you constantly keep hiking up the volcano along on a volcanic ash and lava molten road. But the end result is just amazing and it is all worth it. Once you get there I promise you won't even feel tired at all just by its beauty. My recommendation if you are hiking Pacaya. Wear comfortable clothing that could stand cold wind. Secondly wear comfy shoes that hold a grip. Last but not least carry a granola bar and Gatorade with you alone with a bottle water. You will fall in love at the first sight.

The hike takes less than an hour upwards to the highest point (which is I believe at 2300m, while the volcano is 2550) and offers great views on the surrounding volcanos (Agua, Fuego, Acatenango). The contrast between green vegetation, the blue sky and the black lava makes for beautiful pictures.
We got picked up from our hotel at 5:45 AM and were back at around 12:30. The trips leave Antigua also at 9 AM and 2 PM. The early morning trip gave us a cloudless sky, but the volcano itself was backlit by the sun.
We hiked on the volcano with two young kids - 3 and 5 years old. We hired a horse for them for the way up (Q100) and they managed to hike back down on their own.

We took the afternoon tour from Antigua. Transportation cost was USD$15 and the entrance fee was USD$7. Not bad for the great experience.
The van picked us at 2 pm from the hotel and took 1.45 minutes to get to the park entrance (you have to pass by Guatemala City and traffic is bad). We started the hike around 4 pm and were at the top around 6 pm (perfect to check the sunset).
Keep in mind the following: hike can be hard if you're in not a decent shape (luckily some locals have horses that you can rent!). Have some warm clothing, it gets chilly at night. And really important: have a flashlight! It's not much fun hiking down the hill at pitch dark.
We got back to our hotel around 8 pm. So plan accordingly.

Pretty surreal experience. Fog, sun, awesome views, interesting guides, 'moon rocks', Volcano Shop, history, hiking, fresh air, fellow travellers, decent price for tour - what is not to like!
