“More like a home than a hotel”
Reviewed 24 March 2012

After a tiring trip from Lake Atitlan and a ride over Antigua's pretty but rough cobblestone streets, we felt relaxed the moment we walked into Casa Encantada. A sweet litttle boutique hotel with only ten rooms, it was more like someone's home than an inn. The living room is cozy and artfully decorated as are the very comfortable rooms and beautiful baths. The nicely landscaped roof garden with views of the city and volcanoes is a great place for beginning the day with breakfast or ending it with twilight cocktails. The multi-lingual staff was warm and welcoming, and after getting us settled gave excellent directions to points of interest. It's an easy ten minute walk to the main plaza with the requisite cathedral and governor's palace along with plenty of other worthwhile sites, shops and eateries. After a busy day of exploring, Casa Encantada was a lovely oasis to come home to. Our only regret was that we didn't have more time to spend there.

We Spent a week at Casa Encantada while in Antigua and loved every minute of it. the hotel is small but very tastefully decorated. Our room was comfortable and spacious. The staff was friendly and breakfast was amazing! The hotel is about a 10 minute walk to parque central but if you're not a walker, take a Tuk-tuk (5 Q's) and you'll be there in 2! The hotel can be noisy in the mornings given its location, but nothing out of the ordinary. Overall, a great value and highly recommended hotel.

Room Tip: -Ask for one of the back rooms.

We got an excellent deal on this boutique hotel from Lastminute.com. I doubt we would have booked at the highish regular rack rate. But it’s a jewel of a place and we liked it a lot – it has very much the colonial private house feel. And we didn’t have any of the issues which have cropped up in earlier TA reviews. It is indeed five longish blocks from the centre, and more from the restaurants over the other side by the arch. But it’s still only ten-fifteen minutes, and seemed a well-lit and perfectly safe stroll to us. It was very quiet at night, even though our room was right on the street. And the room was actually large with a modern electronic room safe which worked fine. As for overall security the locked main door and buzzer entry is reassuring. Bed, bathroom, hot water (eventually) were all impeccable; in fact the linen, toiletries etc. were the best we saw in Guatemala. TV (even BBC World!) and wi-fi worked well. We weren’t able to sample the much-praised breakfast as we had very early starts on both our mornings there. We asked for substitute box breakfasts, and frankly at this class of hotel they could have made a bit more effort (just a brown bag with a Coca-Cola, a tired banana and a soggy cheese roll – not much to climb a volcano on!). Which cost them a fifth star.

My husband and I stayed here for New Year's Eve in 2010. It didn't disappoint. Although our room was tiny, it was lovely and the atmosphere of the terrace and main rooms were cozy and classic. Breakfast was delicious and there is nothing better than eating a traditional Guatemalan meal with a view of the surrounding volcanoes. They invited their guests to share a champagne toast with them on New Year's Eve which was a nice gesture, and the staff was always accommodating. We highly recommend this intimate hotel if you want to stay away from the hustle and bustle of the main square.

We stayed four nights at Casa Encatada, a small hotel situated five blocks from the main plaza. It was a little further out than we felt comfortable with as far as walking to and from the plaza at night. The hotel is beautiful although very small - our room was really tiny, and we could not move around without bumping our elbows on the walls! For one night that would have been OK but we ended up feeling cramped. We recommend travelers choose one of the larger rooms if staying longer. The sheets and pillows were excellent however our bed was really hard and not very comfortable for us. The breakfasts were very good, with the coffee being the best we had during our entire visit to Guatemala! An issue we had with the hotel was that for our entire stay, we did not have the use of our room safe. Apparently the owner is the only person who has acccess to them, probably a good thing. But she was never there at the same time we were and the hotel staff did not have a way of opening ours up so we could use it. Without these issues we would have rated this hotel excellent since overall it really is a very nice hotel.

This charming hotel has a real home feel with open fires and cozy beds out of a storybook tale. A lovely garden and breath taking views of the volcanos from the terrace. Hotel is in a nice quiet part of town within distance of everything closed to the museum, Church and ruins of San Francisco. The staff and service were great during our stay. I was stranded in Antigua with my daughters after a tour operator never showed. I tried a couple of different posadas near by but all did not open the door even though it was pouring and we were soaked. Casa Encantada not only open their doors but also helped us get transportation that was realiable. It's a luxury hotel so not really suited for small children.
