“Tour of Burma”
Reviewed 21 April 2012

Hotel in quiet location but next to Mandalay Hill. Nice grounds around the swimming pool. The elecricity in the room was extremely dodgy kept cutting out. Average hotel probably the worst property I stayed in the whole tour of Burma.

Good hotel, great pool, and lovely view from the rooms. We had a junior suite and had a fold out bed for our son - this was so uncomfortable that we had to ask for an extra mattress which was done promptly. It is a busy hotel and seemed to have lots of groups staying but we had no major compaints. Rooms are a little tired but our friends room was actually a bit brighter than ours. Breakfast was excellent and we ate most days outside on the terrace.

Room Tip: Junior suite is good value

Location next to palace but off city center. Quiet with nice pool and good hillside view. Rooms are ok, cold in winter months. Place is flooded by incoming and outgoing groups, and if you are on a private tour, perhaps better to abstain. However staff in restaurant very friendly and do their best for individual travellers. Value for money ok, althoughbe aware dur to increased demand prices going up substantially. Holds true for all of Myanmar.
Good point is you can pay buy credit card although surcharge is 5% and booking done in Thailand, thus no receipt obtained.

Room Tip: in winter choose palace side because sun is warming up room!

I stayed at this lovely huge hotel right after Typhoon Nargis -- there were very few people there at the time but they made our stay as perfect as possible. I don't understand some of the reviews as sufficient ----- this hotel is far from 'sufficient'. Beautifully designed rooms with views of their gorgeous pool and spa area and the mountain behind. All five star services were unexpected, such as CNN and some other USA programs at night in this military-ruled country. If you didn't get your news, you just ask the desk to please turn the satelite for about couple hours -- depending on which country of people are at the hotel at your time. I found this the situation in all the hotels when going over the International Date line. They always had a ride for me when I needed it; let me swim until late if I wanted to; delicious food choices and since they had to limit the electricity, they would watch me coming & going and make sure it was all on while I was there.
I couldn't have asked for more. It's not in the middle of town, but transportation is cheap, so no one should complain about that. If you didn't know you were NOT in town, then you didn't do your homework!

Room Tip: I don't think there is a bad choice -- depends if you want to see the pool and spa OR the temple...

This was a lovely place to stay, not far from the hubbub of central Mandalay. We loved the bar - and the breakfast was to die for. Our favorite was the coconut noodle soup! Great service and lovely rooms. This is a very nice hotel.

The Mandalay Hill Resort is an attractive upscale modern high-rise at the base of Mandalay Hill, not far from the palace wall and moat but a couple of miles from central Mandalay. There is not much around so you will need your own transport or be willing to take taxis. This large hotel caters to tour groups and offers all the amenities of a city resort – huge lobby with soaring ceiling, attractive outdoor swimming pool, spa, fitness center, etc., etc. One downside to the presence of so many tour groups, though, is that the elevators are impossibly overbooked at checkout time, and the breakfast restaurant is anything but serene. Be prepared to avoid these times or get a room on a lower floor and use the stairs.

My wife and I stayed here for three nights in Feb. ‘12 as part of a tour. Our room (630) was good-sized and nicely appointed with a comfortable double bed, dresser, luggage stand, desk, reading chair and small table, and a mini-bar. There was a built-in closet with ample storage space and an in-room safe. The large window overlooked the pool and garden area. Rooms on the other side of the hall would have a view of the palace grounds and the city beyond. The bathroom had adequate room and was attractive, with a tub/shower combo and a single sink. There was only a small amount of counter space.

Wi-fi is available but we thought it was very expensive – $2 per hour – though you can get a daily rate of $5. Likewise the restaurant prices seemed exorbitant to us given the cost of goods and labor in Myanmar, but the food was pretty good.

Although it is hard to fault the facilities at the Mandalay Hill we would not stay here again and would instead opt for something more reasonable in a more central location. This is a matter of personal preference, though and many others are likely find the Mandalay to be ideal.

I stayed at the Mandalay Hill Resort. It wasn't and isn't a 5 star, but if you need a bed to rest at, and want a good location, especially in relation to the hill (which is breathtaking) and was our highlight of Mandalay, then I would recommend staying here. The service was always welcoming and helpful. The restaurant had good food, although the breakfast buffet wasn't very good.

We saw the puppet show in the evening, and it was really sweet.

The hotel also takes credit card, which is a bit unusual for Myanmar in general.
