After reading about the crowds for sunset, we decided to go up late afternoon instead and indeed it was quite peaceful then. It was quite warm and humid but the climb is not long or difficult and you can stop along the way to see various mini sites with Buddha statues and even one with his footprints. The top is a small area with a white stupa and that’s where you get the best view of the beautiful LP countryside and river. For variety, climb up from the small track starting from the northeast and then go down the shorter path towards to northwest where the Royal Palace is.

Not sure this was worth 20000 Kip. View not that amazing. Have seen better. Would recommend other things before this.

...which makes the short, sharp climb well worth it, even though you’ll end up sweating bucket loads. 20K kip to enter is fair, even if the stupa and shrine at the top could do with some TLC. Still, the views are truly beautiful.

Good for the sunset over the city. Get there VERY early. At least an hour before sunset. The top view area is tiny and gets very very crowded. Great views of The whole city.

We all climbed the 328 steps to the top before sunset. It is hot but not humid in the spring, and it wasn't as bad as I thought. The very top gets overcrowded just before the sun sets. You can get a glorious view from the next level down. Go to the edge past the huge banyon tree. Gorgeous! We went there 15 minutes before sunset and were the first there so had a great view. They sell those sparrows to be released at temples, was tempted to set them free but they just gather them up again. Don't like abuse of birds so didn't do it. Supposedly you'll be blessed.
