“Modern Comfort, Uneven Service”
Reviewed 9 June 2011

The Riga Palace is a new, modern high-rise hotel located an easy walk to the Souk, the National Museum, the Old Town area, and to the new and fascinating area along River Street. We stayed here for three nights in April 2011, and we recommend it for convenience and comfort.

Our room (#1227) was large and very attractively furnished with a comfortable king sized bed, night stands, side table with two chairs, a desk, a dresser with mini bar & t.v. There was a built-in closet with ample drawer and shelf space. The large, attractively tiled bathroom had a tub/shower combo and a fair amount of counter space. Two issues with the room were that water from the shower collected on the bathroom floor (a design flaw) and the a.c. was noisy and not very effective.

Breakfast was served in the restaurant on the roof terrace, which has an excellent view of the city. The setting was pleasant and the buffet was pretty good, but there was no fruit and only boiled eggs rather than scrambled or fried. There was an adequate selection of rolls, yogurt, olives.

Service at the front desk was mixed. We asked for help finding a restaurant in the old town area and were sent in the wrong direction by someone who didn’t seem to like being bothered. Other times, however, the personnel were friendly and helpful. Overall this didn’t detract from our experience, and we still recommend the Riga Palace as a comfortable and convenient option for Aleppo.

I just dont know why we have to see such places in existence. I stayed in this house only because it was high season and i did not wanted to stay in the Sheraton. I like local hotels with charme. This house not far from the famous rundown Baron hotel is a big kitsch palace. It must be the dream come true for the ownerfamily, but it seems an nightmare for those who have taste. The overall design something in between russian aristrocratic and bohemian art deco, this house does not fit in its neighborhood. Its alienated the surroundings. The rooms are crowdied and small to other hotelrooms I have stayed in. The Aircon kept me awake most of the night, you could not control the AC in the room.
If you have a choice stay in one of the oldcity hotels nearby.

The Riga in Aleppo, situated in a rather funky area that caters to buyers of ball bearings and the like, is quite attractive, has comfortable rooms and an excellent, spacious restaurant on the top floor which overlooks a good part of the city. There are muliple choices of entrees but I must confess it's the desserts that I remember the most. The hotel is quite central and a good starting off place.
In spite of my enthusiasm for the restaurant, I really wanted shish kebab and low and behold on the same street but opposite the Riga, there are 3 unpretentious restaurants catering to the locals where I enjoyed the tastiest of lamb kebabs which I won't forget.

We traveled to Aleppo by bus company "Has Turizm" from Antakya, Turkey. It takes 1 hr to the Syrian border, 1 hr to complete the customs procedures of 2 countries and 1 hr to Aleppo from the border costing 10 TL (7 $)/passenger. Bus station (Antep Garage) for Turkish bus companies is in the downtown and only 200 mts to the hotel. Reception is friendly, the rate for 3 persons in a room was 125$/day including breakfast and tax but the third bed is an extra bed. we stayed on the 5th floor and the room was full with the third bed. Wireless internet was working in the room. Safe is present in room. Terrace restaurant is very good to view all Aleppo. Many mechanical spare parts shops lined up on the front street of the hotel while auto mechanics lined up on the street at the back of the hotel. It is 200 mts to the main square Bab al-Faraj area and 1 km to the souqs (bazaars). Taxis are everywhere and they are easy to take and very affordable, at most 100 SP (2 $)
Aleppo was ruled successively by the Hittites, Assyrians, Arabs, Mongols, Mamelukes and Ottomans. The 13th-century citadel, 12th-century Great Mosque and
the Archaeological Museum of Aleppo which contains exhibits from the stone age to modern times are must to see.
Aleppo is a fairly conservative city. Dress appropriately to avoid any problems, women should not wear anything that is too revealing. If you follow that simple dress code you should not have any problems. Headscarves are not necessary unless you want to enter a mosque but even then grey cover-all robes are available at no extra charge.
You should feel safe to walk around in any part of the city at any time day or night.
The night life is very active. You can return to the markets and public squares that you visited during the day and by 10pm they will be bustling with people selling food and clothes. It is a like a street fair every night.
The breakfast at this hotel was very rich and hygienic. You must be careful for food or water borne diseases here. If you are tired after a day of wandering around the souk, try bottled water and fruits which are safe.

The Riga Palace is modern and well equipped to international standards. We were allocated a larger than normal room which made it even better value for money. For eating out, the Jdeida area is 10 to 15 minutes away on foot with several options. The Citidel is about 20 minutes walk through the suq, and is magnificent. Walk around the corner to the Baron Hotel for a beer on the terrace and a touch of old colonialism
Breakfast on the Riga rooftop terrace was included in the rate and there was a good choice. When several tour bus groups coincided it was a bit of a scrum, though manageable. The staff seemed prepared for this and did well.
We stayed three nights and were very satisfied.
The car park is under the hotel with valet parking.

I stayed at the hotel via travel agency at Adana. When I reached the hotel I honestly puzzled with the location. It was near car repair shops tec. Then I realized that the location was excellent to sight seeing places and all in walking distance.
The breakfast was superb and the rooms were very comfortable
