“nice!”
Reviewed 30 March 2012

Food was good but not as amazing as the reviews here made it out to be. It was well presented, with good portions but lacked the real flair of a top quality restaurant. It seems there is a very well equipped kitchen inside but I think it required some leadership and craftsmanship within the kitchen to really bring out the best of the ingredients, and the kitchen staff. The ambience was really nice, most customers chose to sit outside on the dirt and gravel, god knows why as the indoor decor was beautiful.

The ethical restaurant is an admirable idea, but I wonder if the staff are paid a fair wage and not just given accommodation, food and education. I do hope so.

Value-wise unfortunately other restaurants on tripadvisor do offer better value. Understandably in order to run a restaurant which also caters to the employees' accommodation and educational needs there are additional costs compared to conventional eateries, but that isn't really the point here, we just want excellent food at a bargain!

Mango salad at $3.75 is too much, and spring rolls for $3.50 (4 pieces) was very high for local standards, so locals are priced out!

I hope the two owners are not offended, but take this review as constructive criticism to improve the quality of the fare, so they can start producing top quality chefs who can eventually handle the rigours of working in a busy restaurant.

We’re not offended by your review, but honestly don’t see it as constructive either. We put a lot of effort in making HAVEN a wonderful, kind and secure place for our trainees and permanent staff - as well as our guests.

We (the owners & manager) are always at HAVEN and are more than happy to talk about the training program, the very qualified craftsmanship in our kitchen, the salaries and all the extras our trainees and staff get. We have nothing to hide or to be ashamed of and we appreciate real interest from our guests. There’s nothing like a good chat, as this is always interesting for both sides and much better then hinting wrong assumptions afterwards.

We’re sorry our food didn’t satisfy your expectations. We truly believe we offer excellent food for very fair prices. And of course eating at HAVEN supports our training program. After all, this restaurant was set up only for the one reason: to give young adult orphans a work training and therefore a real chance in life. Anyone who wants to support this purpose, does that by eating here and in return gets treated with our yummy food and lovely service. If that is not what someone is looking or aiming for, then there are enough other places to go to.

“Enjoyed great tasting food and supporting a good cause.”
Reviewed 29 March 2012

My girlfriend and I really enjoyed eating at Haven.

We first decided to go to Haven to support a good cause (Haven offers waiting/chef training for local orphans), little did we know that the food was going to be so good too! We really enjoyed the fresh spring rolls, the mixed satay, the amok and the yellow bean cake. Yummy!

The restaurant managers are Swiss, so as expected the place runs like clockwork and the kitchen is immaculately clean (which we liked because we have delicate western stomachs).

Good value. Pleasant setting. Menu has some western delicacies too.

Enjoy!

“Fantastic food! A haven from Pub Street!”
Reviewed 28 March 2012

My husband and I loved this place.
Just back from dinner there and have to review it!
You've gotta go to this place...

The ethos, the food, the drink, the tunes... Everything about it was just right!

We had two glasses of excellent red wine and two soft drinks. An amazing burger and the Khmer curry... Frankly the best food we have eaten in town so far, and we will be back tomorrow night for more of the same!

Wine $3 per glass
Cola $1 per can
Curry $5
Burger $6

Food was prepared in an open kitchen, so you could see the kitchen crew at work in a clean and safe working environment. The food was plentiful, fresh and delicious... and eaten super fast!

The service was very good. The wee waiter seemed nervous but was really focused on his work. He spotted our sweaty foreheads and directed a fan at us to keep us cool! Nice one wee man!

In comparison to the Cambodian BBQ restaurant the previous night it was miles ahead... Although the BBQ was good you pay for the theatre of it I think.

I can't recommend this place highly enough and they deserve more recognition and custom away from the Pub Street and alleyway tourist traps.

The group who manage/ organise The Haven do so to help teenage orphans who have no where to else to go after the leave the orphanage, and in doing so train them and teach them valuable skills as well as supporting them emotionally as they find their way in the world. This is exactly the kind of help the people of this country need and if you have read any of my previews reviews on other activities, tours etc then you will understand why I fully commend and admire this group of individuals but most of all the kids that in a wee while, will be running the show!

Keep it guys and girls!

“Delightful Haven”
Reviewed 28 March 2012

The haven is just along from our hotel and a short hop from the busy Pub Street area. We always try and eat at establishments where young people are being given a chance to learn a trade. The quality of these has been quite varied. But the young staff at the Haven have been well very trained and the table service was excellent, Something which some of our London waiters could learn from. The menu is a nice mix, with enough choice to suit all tastes. I wish all the young people working there every success... they certainly deserve it.

A delightful review indeed! Thank you so much for that. And thank you for all your support - to HAVEN as well as the other training restaurants you've visited. It takes guests like you, that make these kind of trainings possible. Best wishes!

“Lovely setting, great food”
Reviewed 27 March 2012

Dining for a good cause is nice, but it's even better when the food is this gorgeous. Recommendations here include the Khmer curry, onion rings, mixed satay and schnitzel. Great staff, lovely garden and good music.
