“Good Economy Hotel - One BIG Problem”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 February 2012

Economy hotel. Hotel prices go crazy in Harbin just before Chinese New Year and we had extended our vacation by 2 days and decided to try Ibis for a couple nights. Price was an absolute bargain so I was a little worried about it.

I'd give them 4 stars for an economy hotel if it wasn't for one thing (If yo want, skip to end to get to my complaint)

The location is great. Close to St Sophia Church and the entrance is only 2 blocks from Zongyang Street, which means shopping, restaurants and fun is very close by.

The girl at the counter spoke very good English. I didn't need my wife (she's Chinese) to check in or out.

The room (Queen and its the largest bed they have) was very clean - It seemed to be brand new. The room was small but well designed. A full length counter on the window wall served as a desk and it was big enough for my laptop. No other chairs, but there was a padded bench.

We had 4 large bags (-20F this time of year, one bag each just for winter gear). 2 roller bags fit easily under the bed and the faux hardwood floor made it easy to slide them in and out. There was room for 2 more along the wall without being in the way too much. Coats and hand bags on the bench... Make no mistake, these are small rooms but if you're organized they are ok.

The bathroom was small but just fine to comfortably do what needs to be done. No tub but the shower was relatively large. It was clean. The whole room was clean. Like my grandma cleaned it. Twice!

The room was hot but I was able to control that by cracking the window.

Ethernet internet worked well. Not many English speaking TV channels but there were a few. I did not eat the breakfast offered, at the time, the reviews about it were universally terrible so we by passed it.

My wife really liked the room. She likes a bargain, doesn't spend much time in the room anyway she liked the way it looked and was laid out But....

I had one major problem with it: The bed was hard as a rock. I'm used to getting hard beds in China, but wow! I spend over 100 nights a year on the road, and have for over 20 years: Hardest bed ever. I'm not prone to complaining about the small things, but I felt like they forgot to put a mattress on the box spring that I was sleeping on. IF we stay here again I'm bringing my foam camping pad to sleep on.

Room Tip: Beds are hard as rocks, bring an air mattress or camping pad to sleep on.

I get a kick out of reading the reviews that some people write. So many angry and picky travelers finding fault with everything and blasting what is basically a pretty good hotel option - especially for China! Sure the hallways smell of sewer or cigarettes sometimes. China IS a sewer after all! And everyone knows that China is the world's biggest ashtray! I mean, aren't babies here born with cigarettes in their mouths? But seriously now, the Harbin Ibis has many strong poinbts - location being #1 Five minutes walk from virtually anywhere you would want to go in Harbin. Helpful and basically honest front desk staff who will arrange taxis and shuttles to the ice festival. The rooms are clean and basically quiet. Sure the nonsmoking rooms smell like cigarettes - but EVERYTHING in China smells like cigarettes! For $41 a night, I DARE you to find a better deal! So there!

Nice hotel with clean functional rooms. It is in a good location near shops restaurants and one of the ice shows in winter. The staff didn't speak great English and were more interested in selling you things than giving you information. I'd stay there again.

Room Tip: The picture of the hotel shows two massive towers, these are not part of the hotel, you'll be st...

Stayed here in February 2012. The location is great - very close to the shopping district downtown and down the street from Zhaolin Park. The room is very basic - double bed, small bathroom, walk-in shower, western toilet, good heating. There's a tv too but it's useless as it only has Chinese channels. Bed is somewhat hard but not bad. 2 complimentary water bottles but no fridge. Some of the staff speak English but not all - you have to find the 1-2 on duty who are English speakers.

The biggest problem I had with this place is that they allow smokers in the lobby, so it's constantly filled with smoke. Not exactly the greatest welcome when you enter the hotel. Vending machine with overpriced drinks. Don't bother with the room service - also overpriced.

Some advice: if you go to the ice festival, book it with the tour agent downstairs - there's usually a sign with her number. The price is the same and they provide you with free shuttle service there and back, thus negating the opportunistic taxi drivers that stain the city.

Clean, basic and warm rooms just to go to sleep, that's about it. Weird smell at the corridors, must be mole etc? The front desk knows barely nothing about the city or the ice festival. The free internet at the room is nice plus (it's not wireless)
