“Wonderful reception staff”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 February 2012

We travelled as a family of 4 and stayed at this hotel whilst visiting the Yungang Grottoes and the Hanging Temple in Hunyuan County.
As it was off season, and we arrived late in the evening, the hotel was very quiet and check in was a breeze with our guide. Unfortunately once our guide left us, communication became extremely difficult as most of the staff could not speak English. However, whilst communication was difficult, the staff were extremely helpful trying to answer our questions and even when we gave up ordering room service, the reception staff came up to our rooms with a menu to help us order which was most appreciated. This was not requested and I was most impressed by the initiative taken by the various staff to help us order our meals. Perhaps they were short staffed; unfortunately our meals took close to 2 hours before our room service order was totally filled. It was nice but after waiting for close to 2 hours somehow your appetite becomes quite suppressed when you are tired and it was close to 1.30am before our order was finally delivered.
The room was comfortable and well appointed. Unfortunately the carpet was soiled which gave the impression that cleanliness was not ideal. Perhaps they should not use light coloured carpets in their rooms.
The buffet breakfast was rather ordinary with mostly Chinese breakfast dishes. The biggest detraction for us was the fact that the guests did not seem to observe “no smoking” signs and smoked as they wished in nearly all the public areas including the lifts which was most annoying.
As the restaurant close very early 8.45 pm we had to order room service again however this time it only took 30 minutes before food arrived!
Overall an average stay but I was told that its the best in Datong.

Room Tip: Go early for dinner!

Stayed there 1 night. Nice, well equipment room, comfy beds and great bathroom. Everything looked new and clean. Breakfast buffet full of Chinese dishes but western food very limited.
Chinese tourists staying in this hotel smoke everywhere including elevators.City itself horrible, look like they rebuilding every square in it. On the other hand, Yungang Grottoes and Hanging Monastery are definitely worth the trip. Two amazing sides.

4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 December 2011

Stayed for 2 nights in December 2011.
Modern, high rise hotel which looks and feels pretty new - huge room, nice decor with all the amenities and a comfortable bed - spacious bathroom with great shower and all the goodies expected.
Breakfast was a huge buffet which looked more like a full dinner buffet to us - it caters more to Chinese tastes but plenty there to munch anyway.
Wifi was only available in the lobby area & in the top floor banqueting restaurant (where the said breakfast buffet was) which was only a bit of a niggle.
English speakers amongst the staff were a a bit thin on the ground but they were helpful and made us feel very welcome .... perhaps this was because Dating is not busy in December (could be something to do with the freezing cold weather!!) and parts of the facility seemed to be hibernated.
One thing to bear in mind about Datong is that it closes early in the evenings so late night dinners are not an option - by 9.30pm the whole place seems to be in bed ...... ! There is a very good restaurant literally next door to the hotel - no English speaking staff but a menu full of pictures to point at and hilarious translations of what the dishes are alleged to be.
Overall enjoyed our stay at the Howard Johnson and would definitely recommend it for fellow travellers.

Three members of our family stayed in Howard Johnson's Hotel in Datong. The room was very large and very comfortable. The lobby decor is a bit different than one might expect for a Howard Johnson's as it reflects Chinese tastes but the bedroom was very, very nice. Datong is a city where few westerners are seen so the breakfast tends, not surprisingly, to be more Chinese than western but there was plenty of food. We ate dinner out on a side street at a small restaurant and we were made welcome. We strongly recommend the Grottos and we also drove the the Hanging Temple. Their has been a decision to rebuild the former city walls and return the center of Datong to its historical past. It is really incredible to see the work being done to accomplish this. Definitely worth a stay and this hotel was very nice. There was free high speed wireless internet in the lobby but not in the room. We sat in lobby to connect through our phones with no problem.

This is part of my two week Henan / Shanxi tour, and was arranged by the travel agent. The is a wonderful high-rise 5-star level hotel. The hotel is near the recently re-constructed beautiful city wall. Quite a few good restaurants nearby. Also it is within driving to the famous Yungang Grottoes (雲崗石窟) an UN Heritage site. If you come to town for business, you may want to arrange a tour of the Grotto.

The lobby is fantastic. The bedroom is super-sized, the beds are very comfortable with great bedside lights for reading. The desk is very functional for business work. The bathroom has separate bath tub and shower and the water was so very nice and warm. A lot of amenities.
The large flat screen TV has many many Chinese channels plus CNN, Discovery, and several English language movie channels. NICE! Although there is free wired connection for internet in the room, you will need to go to the lobby for free wifi.

The breakfast is wonderful with many different Chinese and western dishes and egg and noodle stations. You got to try the desert and hand-made knife-cut noodles.

I enjoyed my stay here very much and will come back.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with the city wall view, it is beautiful.

Stayed at this hotel on a tour. The room was very spacious and clean. There was free internet in the room, free WiFi at the lobby and at the restaurant on 28/F. TV has CNN and HBO channel. Breakfast selection was very good compared to all other 5-star hotels we stayed on this tour. The orange juice was the standard western quality one (1st time among the 4 hotels we stayed in), there was a full salad bar, several kinds of bread and pastries, several Chinese hot dishes as well as congee. However, staff at the restaurant could hardly communicate in English and not attentive enough to notice all butter was gone. It took them more than 15 minutes to bring out new butter and we had to leave already by then.
