“I had a great time”
Reviewed 28 March 2012

Large room with nice workspace and kitchenette, good internet. Good hot water, water is drinkable, I had no soap problems. Big bed, noise issue not so bad higher up (I was on 13, rooms up to 20, but nothing like a moto with no muffler at 2 am). Nice breakfast area with good food. Staff nice and helpful but I speak Spanish so can't judge English. Buses pass in front of hotel almost all of which go to center of town (Parque Berrio), cost same as Metro without the walk (however, getting back, many buses which seem like they are going past the hotel actually don't, ask for Avenida Poblado y Primera Calle Sur). High-end grocery store (Carulla) is 2 blocks south on other side of street. Food prices high near hotel, better to have a big late lunch in centro.

Great staff, a couple of whom speak excellent english. The location is wonderful except for being on a very busy street. The windows aren't sealed nor double paned and a lot of road noise comes in. Don't expect to get more than one teeny tiny bar of soap at a time as well...

Room Tip: ask for a room away from the street, they are a bit quieter.

The hotel is in a great location and very safe. It is within a 15-20 min easy and safe walk to the metro line (Poblado station) - provides quick, easy and cheap access to many of Medellin's attractions. The hotel staff were very friendly offering their advise on things to see and places to go; and good English. The view from the top floor of the hotel is superb; same place they serve the daily breakfast which is GREAT food with many typical Colombian delights - chicharrón, rice with chorizo, arepa to name a few. The room we had was HUGE and yes whilst it did have a noisy air-con that I wouldn't have expected from a hotel of this standard; it was the only minor drawback from an otherwise superb hotel - easily recommend it and stay here again.

My boyfriend stayed at this hotel for 2 weeks while on a business trip to Colombia. We were initially worried for his safety but once he got there he felt completely safe. He said the staff was very friendly and polite, they also spoke english. The hotel was clean and he really enjoyed staying there. The hotel is in a mall complex so you have access to many stores and restaurants near by. He stayed in a room with 2 other people, one thing he did notice were some extra charges at check out but other than that he really liked this hotel.

I am writing this review mostly for the US traveller who does not have a lot of experience in Colombia. I live in a town nearby, but I stay in a lot of HIEX's in the US, so I thought I would give this a try on a weekend night with my wife.

The location is awesome. Walking distance to high-end malls with tons of restaurant choices. If you are an American who is missing your home cuisine, there is a Burger King in the lobby and a 24-hour McDonald's down one block (don't laugh - it's a big treat for me). The views from the rooms are great.

The prices for a downtown hotel are low relative to what you get, so it is a good value.

The rooms are huge, and the beds comfortable - pretty much what you expect from a HIEX. The differences from typical HIEX:

- Floors are laminate, not carpet. Typical for Latin America, but a little jarring if you expect a US hotel experience.

- $20 per person add for any additional bodies beyond the first.

- The air conditioner is undersized, and will not operate without the room key card in a slot by the door. If you walk into a hot room, it will take a long time for it to cool down, and I don't think it will do the job on a really hot day. Since you can't leave it on when you leave in the morning, you do risk coming back to an uncomfortable room in the afternoon. Medellin is generally not really hot, but it does have its days.

- There is a mini bar with selection of liquor, beer, snack food.

- Complimentary breakfast is close to standard US fare, but no bacon! There is a lot more fresh fruit.

- No bathtub, but it does have a huge walk-in shower with plenty of hot water.

NOTE: The hotel is not well marked. You can recognize most HIEX's a mile away. This one only has a small sign that is not easily visible from the street. Our cab driver did not know where it was, and had to ask for directions. I recommend that you have the address written down and maybe print a map.

For couples, I think there are much better choices in Medellin. While we loved the location, the hotel is for business and has nothing special for couples. The sliding door on the bathroom right near the bed is a problem - if one person goes to the bathroom and the other is in bed, you are separated by a thin door that does not really close properly. Not an issue for a solo traveller, but a real annoyance if there is more than one person in the room.

Was given an enormous room on the 9th floor, complete with sitting area and little kitchen. Bed comfortable, although the aircon unit was very noisy. When it was switched off, you could hear quite a lot of street noise coming through the machine. Curtains let in quite a lot of light at the edges. Breakfast on the roof was pretty good, and with excellent views.

The front desk staff were great -- incredibly helpful and charming -- the rooms were very large in a mini-suite configuration and very comfortable. I was on a high floor (I think all rooms are on high floors) and had a great view. There are plenty of places to eat downstairs and around the hotel to suit all budgets, there are large shopping malls within five minutes walk. Breakfast on the covered but open air top floor was very pleasant. The only downside is that staying in such a nice hotel in such a nice area is deceptive. You could be lulled into thinking this area represents the rest of Medellin; it doesn't! You need to keep your wits about you and stay safe when venturing out of this little comfortable little enclave.
