Santa Cruz cemetery presents the ornately beautiful graves that the Timorese are famous for. In that sense, one could easily spend an hour or more examining the graveyard. But there's also an over-riding sense of sadness (and also outrage) that this was the scene of a massacre of local people by the Indonesian government, during their time of invasion. A very thought provoking destination.

Over 230 young people were massacred by Indonesian Militia near here, those that were left injured were taken to the hospital where the Indonesians murdered those as well. Reviewing the names and ages of those buried here made my skin crawl, such a senseless waste.

"If you want to know how people live, visit the place where they bury their dead." This is so true. Our guide from Timor Adventures brought us here, and it is very impressive to see the ornate graves. Very, very Portuguese.

This place does not have a lot of signs or things for tourists but it is heart and soul of Dili. Real people are buried here. People who lost their lives, but most important you appreciate the site for its significance to the Santa Cruz Massacre.

Good place for a stroll when it is not too hot (no shade). Also visit nearby Indonesian cemetry for a complete different style
