Though it is a couple of hours journey from Aswan, pretty much in the middle of nowhere, this is totally worth it! Lake Nasser is picturesque. And both the temples are very majestic and beautifully maintained. These were both carved out of the rock mountain. It is amazing how they were transferred here after the creation of Lake Nasser post the construction of the high dam of Aswan. They have done a splendid job.. you cannot see where the stones were broken and rejoined.

Great place to visit if you have some spare time and you’re in the south of Egypt. Is a trek from Aswan but definitely a worthy one!

Sit on the LHS of the plane to get a great view just before landing. We spent less than 2 hrs at the site, and just enough. If you have more time to spare, early mornings before the crowds would be worth the extra effort of staying overnight. It was crowded during our visit(8-10am) though it wasn't unbearable, it took away from some of the experience.

Few tourists travel as far as Abu Simbel. I have to admit that visiting it was one of the dreams since my boyhood. Two temples have been preserved. Photographs are are best made in the early morning. Inside photographing is not permitted except if you pay for an expensive photo pass, but light is so poor that pictures will always be of poor quality. Do not forget visiting the museum roughly 700 meters from the temple complex in the direction of the village.

It took over 3hrs from Luxor to get here from Luxor. You have to be here by 8am as anything after that and it’s too hot to be outside ... so bring a hat, water and sunscreen with you!!

You can buy tickets at the entrance - it’s an extra EGP300.00 to get a photography pass to take pictures inside the temples (well worth it as if you don’t the guards check and make you delete all pics if you don’t have one).

I’m not a spiritual person, but this site has an incredible energy and walking inside Ramses II Tomb is an incredible moment. Just imaging it with the colours on the wall, gold and gifts everywhere and the smell of perfumes leaves you in awe. The sheer scale and level of detail is mind boggling.

Queen Nefertari’s temple is a few minutes walk away and still very imposing - albeit smaller and more demure.

All-in-all it was amazing to see first hand these iconic temples and experience the genius of the Ancient Egyptians!!
