“Another Great Holiday”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 April 2012

I'm glad to see that most of the reviews reflect what a well-intentioned, welcoming hotel the Fort is.

For the first time ever, having stayed at the hotel in Easter 2011 and had a wonderful time, we rebooked for Easter 2012. Myself, my wife and our 3 boys looked forward to returning all year and it certainly didn't disappoint.

Upon arrival we were allocated a non-sea facing room but a quick trip back to reception and we were re-allocated to the same room as last year; 50m from the pool, 100m from the beach, perfect....

We found all staff extremely friendly despite our grey wristbands (sorry previous reviewer but I don't know where you got that idea from). Porters, restaurant and bar staff all recognised us one year on and were genuinely pleased to see us.

Having wandered through 2 or 3 neighbouring hotels I certainly think Fort Arabesque is the pick. The beach is beautiful with plenty of room, not piled on top of each other like the Sunrise next door. The snorkelling is as fantastic as everyone says.

The attention paid to the grounds is admirable and sets the hotel apart. If you are around early in the day you will see hoardes of staff attending to the gardens diligently and it certainly pays off.

The food is of a perfectly adequate standard and I'm pleased to report that the pasta station has upped it's game (they now fry off the garlic/onions/peppers/mushrooms/olives etc prior to addng the passata and pasta unlike last year when it was served fairly raw).

The guy at the watersports centre is really friendly and accommodating whilst the chest freezer at the adjacent beach bar is well stocked with ice-cold beers and wine!!!

If you visit the Fort expecting a true 5 star experience you will end up complaining but in my opinion it is an excellent hotel offering a wonderful, relaxing experience and location. We will go back again many times in the future and I heartily recommend it.

Great to see Lizzie, Mally and Ben again this year too, made the holiday all the more enjoyable....you know who you are!!!

I can't believe that Peter V was staying at the same hotel as us. We too are English, the bar and restuarant staff in both sections of the hotel could not do enough for us. We ate breakfast each day in the main dining room, and were always greeted with a smile and a joke, the waiters brought our hot water and coffee etc very promptly, and being grazers they cleared away our tables equally quickly.
The bar staff in all the bars soon learned "our usual" which was pretty impressive because we were a party of eight.
The entertainment is not to everybody's taste but the hotel is billed as an Italian owned hotel and the entertainment team are mainly from Italy. We went to about 8 shows in our two weeks there and the compares always tried to make all announcements in English, Italian and German, they even tried French a couple of times and taught Arabic on the beach a couple of mornings a week.
Our room was clean and well maintained, and the service great, I dropped and broke a bottle of nail polish, I tried to clean it up myself but then went down to report my accident at reception. By the time I had strolled back to my room it had been completely cleaned up. Now that's what I call service.
The food at Fort Arabesque is a good standard but can get a bit repetative, we alleviated the boredom by eating a la carte at the beach bar on a couple of evenings, 8 of us 5 courses, Steak or Lobster it was delicious and it cost less than £100.
We liked it so much we have already booked to go back in July.
There are some very "English" Hotels in the bay, take a minute to read the travel brochures and look at the hotels web sites you will be able to see which ones cater more for English tastes if that is what you want.
Fort Arabesque is very low key, laid back and chilled out. It's not Butlins.

Room Tip: My personal preference is for the side rooms which are larger and have been refurbished, I also pref...

Overall our experience of this hotel was excellent although I do recognise some of the complaints other people have made. We had asked Thompson for a room with a view of the sea which we did not get but the hotel were happy to move us so it was no problem.

The room was clean, well maintained and very spacious and our boys (12 & 15) had their own room next to us which worked very well. The beach is definitely the best in the bay - less cramped and with it's own stretch of coral directly in front of it. This means the snorkeling is excellent.
There are two blocks the original one and the new block (where saga are based). The restaurant in the original block is not nice - it is difficult to get a table and the waiting staff are rushed and inattentive - so don't use it. Instead head to the other block (you can use it) it is smaller but much quieter and the waiting staff are excellent. Generally the food was of a high standard although if you want the same thing as a large group you might be waiting a while as they didn't refill things that often. The a la carte meal we had which was extra was excellent - would recommend.

English guests are in the minority and all national stereotypes are true - certain countries did nick the sunbeds right outside the hotel but a two minute walk in either direction and you will get one. Certain nationals did try and clean out the buffets - did watch one child walk away with 8 ice creams! There are no russians at the hotel not sure what they did to get to banned.

Don't bother with the evening shows - all in italian but the bar singers were very funny - alhtough not sure they meant to be!

Pools were generally clean and shop and other facilities were good. Pharmacy on-site is handy did have a few stomch problems but nothing too major and remember most of us don't eat that much rich food all the time at home so that is probably the problem for most people. Pharmacist did give us antibiotics - although he said they weren't which seemed to do the trick.

Overall very good so would recommend but bear in mind you may be sharing with lots of europeans and you won't have it to yourself so there will be some compromises.

After a 7 day Nile cruise, which was so wonderful, relaxing and magical.where the staff were so friendly, polite and could not do enough for us.We were looking forward to having a great time at the Arabesque. The reception and porters were very very polite, and were excellent, the rooms were well equipped and the views of the beach gardens and pool were fantastic. However when going into dinner we were completely ignored, found a table on our own.It was so plain to see that the band on our wrists being grey (donating the fact we were English ) had a huge impact on all the service,or lack of it from the restaurant and the bars in the next 7 days. The waiter then just threw the cutlery on the table, and just slapped them into order, and was gone,no hello good evening,no offer of drinks.Be aware that wherever you go in the grounds, you will see that those with blue and red/orange bands on will be greeted, and spoken to in a friendly way,and no chore is to much, and full conversations will be had,but if you are not German or Italian, the colour these donate, then you will be blanked and just asked what you want, only twice in the 7 days we were there were we treated like equals,And the service from the main hotel bar was so appalling, that other English guests began to ask if it was just them,or was it the Brits in general.4 times I had to go to the bar and asked to be served only to be told to go and sit,and they will take our order, and then I felt I had to ask outright if you had to be German or Italian to be served or spoken to politely.Breakers bar on the beach was a disgrace,as the staff never spoke unless the manager was there .they just took the order, eventually, and put in front of you, whether it was right or wrong
My party were offended and ashamed that this is the way to treat any guest, and it put a huge down on the holiday in all.whether you sat down to eat early or late, the attitude was the same.total ignorance,And the same with the entertainment, which for some unknown reason, was all in Italian or German,Its very odd trying to watch a show where the compare just babbles on in a language you do not understand,Really what is the point,It borders on pure segregation, they knew other nationals were there, and this spilt over to poolside activities, where the staff came around shouting out invites for people to join in pool exercises, but again only in the 2 dominant tongue.A very arrogant and rude attitude to have for a hotel of this size to have
the hotel and grounds were fantastic, the location unbelievable. But the literature and newspapers all in German,no English info at all,
I and others we met, would warn you not to stay here if your looking for a family getaway,or a romantic break, stay away,as your not seen as a guest by the bar and restaurant staff, with an exception to the SAGA staff and restaurant who are the opposite.Disgraceful, sad and pathetic, and I will do my best to warn others not to stay here, when there are far better and equally beautiful hotels nearby

Room Tip: all rooms are fine, clean and comfortable

Idive Diving Centre is situated within Fort Arabesque hotel. Visiting Makadi Bay, for the first time, I was unsure of who to "dive with" as none on the "big names" are there. Idive is a small family run dive centre but being Padi 5 star I knew that standards would be high and they certainly did not disappoint. I am an experienced diver and have dived in Hurgada and Soma Bay and was expecting to do the same sites again. This was not the case, the best part of Idive for me, as my wife does not dive, is the choice of full day diving or a small boat for single dives..three times a day. I was amazed at the quality of dive sites in the bay area and Idive's experienced dive leaders showed me lots of sights and unusual marine life.

Just returned from a week at Fort Arabesque and was very pleased with both the accomodation and the food on offer. The room we stayed in was spacious and cleaned everyday with fresh linen and towels. The food at all mealtimes was of a good standard with plenty of choice to suit all tastes.
The location is fantastic with a clean sandy beach to relax the days away but also to snorkel in the sea around the coral which is a must. Towels are provided to take to the beach and i would advise reserving a sunbed as this seems to be the done thing!!.
Dress code at mealtimes is fairly relaxed and the hotel staff are friendly and helpful,if its a relaxing holiday your after then this is the place, there is evening entertainment but this strated around 2200hrs and to be honest after lots of sun and a big meal we did not bother with this so i cant comment on how good it was.
I would certainly return again next year.
