“Friendly helpful staff”
Reviewed 21 January 2012

I have just come back from a holiday at the Anchorage.
I was staying in an oceanside room which is close to the pool and restaurant. The room was clean and tidy and is a good size, with a large bathroom and a great view.
All of the staff were, without exception, friendly and helpful.
The lunch mains are mostly F$12 - F$18. The dinner mains are mostly F$22 - F$32. Fiji beer is $5 for a stubbie, or $4 during happy hour (5pm - 7pm nightly).
I had lunch at the Anchorage on three or four occasions and enjoyed it.
There are daytrips to Beachcomber Island from the Anchorage for F$99, which includes lunch, snorkelling etc
I had dinner at the Boatshed Bar and Restaurant at the nearby Vuda Marina which is worth a visit. The food was good and it has nice views.
Some of the reviews below are in my opinion overly critical. I suspect some of it is people who want to book a 3 star hotel, pay 3 star prices, then demand 5 star standards.
If you want a clean tidy hotel with a friendly relaxed atmoshere, this place is great. I will be back.

Have recently returned from Fiji after 5 days staying at The Anchorage.

The room was clean except for The Wasp Colony outside. Probably related to the one in The Pool Table in The dining Area.

The pool was clean and very refreshing.

Organised Day trips to Beachcomber Is for snorkelling (excellent) and also shopping trips to both Lautoka and Nadi.
The staff in restaurant where really excellent especially Joe and Clive (Thanks)
Breakfast Menu the least said the better. Hope the Toaster works shortly as putting ones bread thru 15 times is a joke.
Short walk to First Landing down the Train Track. Well worth the walk. Shop at the Marina on the way so a cool drink is great.
Overall a good place but needs at lot of work done on it.
May consider staying again but would probably stay elsewhere.

We have just returned from 3 nights in a mountain view room and will not be back. Our stay was quite a mixed bag but after arriving over the seriously pot-holed road, past the faded signage then walking over the structurally dubious upper deck, to find no bathroom linens in the room (at 4pm), a smoke alarm chirping and the internal shower-type window (between the toilet and sleeping area) apparently permanently off its hinges, we had the impression of a property in dire need of major capital outlay. This impression remained.

There are 3 TV channels available in-room - on CRTVs which are so old the sound is permanently distorted. Both the fan and the air con have 2 settings: off, and full-on. Bare light bulbs provide the wall lighting and there is no bedding other than a top sheet - a problem when the air con will turn the room frigid at about 4am. All of this would be fine if it was what was expected (ie a couple of rungs above the cabins you might find in camping grounds in NZ), but the price was not in line with the room. Room servicing was near non existent and the room was made up only once during our stay.

In terms of communal areas the deck/restaurant area is pretty, and the a la carte food is both reasonable, and reasonably priced - if you don't mind a long wait. The breakfast is as described below, and we appreciated the warning. The pool was very popular and they could do with a few more loungers (and maintaining the ones they have!). Perhaps the owners could also consider umbrella pick up and drop-off points, for those who need to go to and fro the reception or upper room areas from the restaurant, during the spectacularly heavy downpours.

The general area is good, Viseisei village is interesting and access to Lautoka is both easy and interesting. I agree with earlier comments about meals at the Beachcomber restaurant at Vuda marina (spectacular!) but did not try First Landing. This property will provide a much more "authentic" Fijian experience than the primped and super-sanitised Denarau resorts, but perhaps too much so....

Room Tip: Mountain view rooms are cooler, get the breeze and are near reception - but are up a precipitous hil...

My partner and I have just got home from a wonderful, relaxing 7 days at Anchorage ( 6-13th Jan 2012.
We had an Oceanview Spa room and it was lovely, the staff are awesome, reading other comments, I wonder how friendly these people were as we had no complaints at all about staff and service, you are discouraged from tipping in Fiji and we didn't and still had excellent service.
The food is alright but luckily if you walk the 20mins along the Sugar Cane Railroad Track there is the Vuda Point Marina Restant and First Landing Resort Restarant which was our favourite place to eat.
Try to get a package deal when you book and you don't have extra costs for Travel of better still, hire a scooter from the Marina!!
I loved the way we were greeted by the locals, such a friendly place to go, we will definatley be going back.

Room Tip: Oceanview rooms are closer to the pool and restarant, the walk up the hill is hard in the heat, but t...

If you intend to stay at Anchorage, Please read this first:

- Our flight was delayed so when we got to the airport, no one was waiting for us and the office that's affiliated to the resort was shut. We were sent from one person to the other to determine what can be done and finally managed to get the info lady to call the resort who agreed to pay for a taxi to take us there.

- Location: although it's not far from Nadi and Lautoka, you need some kind of transport. The 'free bus service' that is meant to be provided to guests is a joke. We (and other guests we've been speaking to) never managed to get on one for a variety of reasons: cancelled, not running on the day, you have to book in advance, etc. Surprisingly, the same hotel bus was available if you were willing to pay, and let me tell you that the prices they charge are more than what a normal taxi would charge.
ONE IMPORTANT THING TO ADD: Anchorage is near an oil refinery of which we were not aware. At times, the smell of oil can be very strong, truly unpleasant.

-Service: To tell the truth, reception staff were very polite and courteous, we haven't had a problem with them. Mixed feelings about Restaurant staff though: some were very nice and others were just not interested in doing their job. We often waited and waited to be served, the last night at the resort, after waiting for a good 30 minutes, we decided to signal to the waitresses that we were ready to order, we kept calling them, they would look at us and just completely blank us, it was like some TV show, we couldn't believe it! It was so different from our first night when all staff came around introducing themselves and were eager to serve. After a few days of observation, we deducted that they hovered over new faces only, old mugs weren't worth the effort, especially those who don't tip.

- Rooms: we stayed in an ocean view room. It needs a lot of TLC: Spa didn't work, safe in the room didn't work, TV & remote didn't work, sheets were clearly not changed everyday, on the first night I found a squashed fly on one of the pillows, shower leaked, tea and coffee didn't get topped up. Thank god for the air conditioning unit in the room which made it a bit better.

- Facilities: pool was very nice and clean, we very much enjoyed it especially due to the lack of a beach. Activities were very poor, Kayaks were okay. They organised a trip to Beachcomber which was good overall, that's if you are prepared to do some waiting, bear being shepherded under the sun and cross your fingers that the boat will bring you back safely.

- Food: Allow me to tell you about the 'continental breakfast': the pineapple and orange juices are powdered drinks, the coffee presented in jugs to make it look like filter coffee is no more than a couple of tasteless sachets of instant coffee diluted in 1L of hot water. The bread took several goes to toast not just due to its similarity to cardboard, but also due to the useless toaster that was provided. You have to get in early to avoid the queues for the toaster. A waitress one day thought of toasting some slices ahead which was good, if only she'd used the tongues, people would have eaten that toast and her efforts wouldn't have been wasted!
Fruits were very mediocre, some days you're lucky to get bananas, passion fruits (only seen it once) and papayas, and some days you get a small amount of watermelon and pineapple. Little jams were provided but some were open, mainly the peanut butter maybe due to the heat. I haven't had any cereal but my partner said the sachet he got was stale, the milk is UHT milk, I understand if fresh milk is not available but warm UHT milk? Nah!!

The menus were hard to read, prices varied for some odd reason. We thought pizzas were nice until we were served raw onions over a burnt base. It was very clear that the they burnt the base and covered it up with some veg and a ton of cheese which they somehow managed to melt, microwaved probably as the pizza was cold. The curries were very mediocre, we had far better curries in Nadi and Lautoka for a fraction of the price we paid at Anchorage.

What a shame really because we were really looking forward to the holiday. There is so much that could be done to make one's stay more pleasant at Anchorage, things that don't necessarily require lots of money, just some thought.

Perhaps a different resort would have made a difference, but to be honest Fiji (Nadi and surrounds) overall was a bit disappointing. Even though we hired a car, we struggled to find things to do. People appeared to be very friendly at first, wanting to shake your hand and know where you're from, it soon became apparent that the majority were only interested in dragging you to some souvenir shop and milk you dry. By the end of our holiday, we stopped greeting people in the street who scream Bula! in your face.

I guess you won't know until you try!

Room Tip: Ocean view room is better, you can avoid having to walk up the steep hill.
