Anyone who's been to Batumi lately knows that there's been a bit of a building boom - from hotels to casinos to restaurants, investors are trying to lure tourist dollars through a combination of historic restoration as well as new construction. But this building is probably the wackiest of all. From the outside, the 24-year-old architect took a scale model of the American White House...and turned it upside-down. Yup. Inside, toilets dance on the ceiling of bathrooms.
But if you can get past the weird, this is one of the most delicious restaurants in town. A lot of Georgian food is, for me, very simple, and while heavily delicious, not amazing. The food here is two or three levels up from the cafes closer in town. The veal stew is a rich and complex delight for the palette; there are a range of cold vegetable (bean and eggplant )appetizers that are delectable; the melted cheese is to die for, and basically, it's all good. You can, oddly, get french fries with your meal. I was treated to dinner here, so I don't know the price, but my guess is not cheap. In warm weather, there is a lovely deck with views of the Black Sea and the other oddball culturally-themed restaurants in the immediate vicinity - one looks like the Parthenon, one looks like a windmill - and the casino next door is reminiscent of the Guggenheim. Ah, Batumi!
CAVEAT: This is not the correct address above. I had to include something to convince Tripadvisor it was a real place. Just tell the taxi driver you want to go to the White House, or the Upside Down restaurant. They'll know.
